Just checking back in today and wanted to thank everyone again for their input.  My intent would absolutely not be dump the mare off and that be that, then me reap all of the benefits.  I'm fully aware that this is a tough business and that bad things do happen sometimes to our horses.  They do get injured, they do colic, etc unfortunately.  As I said before, any and all points would be negotiable.

Another thing to consider on both of these mares would be the breeders incentives in the racing industry.  Should one of the resulting foals run out alot of money on the race track, the breeders incentives in LA are amazing and pay the breeder on races all over the Unites States.  In OK, they are good as well, but not like LA.  The stallion owner would also have breeders rights to a large portion of that money.  Just something else to consider.  I would, of course, enroll the mares in the state breeders programs to ensure they foals were eligible.

Again, thank you for all of your input.  This may or may not work out.  I may end up breeding them myself, I may sell them, or there may be someone who is interested in pursuing something like this.  Either way, thanks everyone for giving me food for thought and helping me to see what could/would make this more beneficial for a stallion owner.

I think you are better off keeping them, leaving them for 30 days and pick them up bred… then take them back when they are due and foal them out.

If I were a stallion owner, I would never want to get into an ongoing deal with someone. I would consider partial trades, or free breeds, or maybe an exchange of the first foal… but once the deal is done it's done.

There is a lot of money that goes into raising a foal, and I don't want to lose money every year on a foal that I have an agreement to sell for below price when I could be selling it for it's real price. One year maybe, but every year?

I could see going in partners and splitting stud fees, mare care, vet bills, foaling expenses, sales prepping- and then splitting the profit that way. But you bet both parties will be splitting all the costs.

As a breeder...no....I don't like strings attached when it comes to horse deals.
