Just trying to get some ideas here for planning....how far is your barn from your house? Can you walk to it or do you ride a 4-wheeler/golf cart if its farther away? Is your barn inside your pasture so you can just open stall doors and bring horses in or do you have to lead your horses in from other pastures to the barn? If you have a horse you are riding every day do you keep it in a stall with an outside lot so its quick and convenient to just saddle up and go or do you have to go out to pastures to catch horses to bring them in to ride? How long does it take you to bring a horse in from a pasture and have it ready to ride? Any other info related to this would be appreciated too!

There are some pics of our new place on several of the posts on my blog- http://qheventer.wordpress.com. We have 9 horses that divide into 2 groups and I turn out on 2 decent sized fields with run in sheds. I have 3 that stay turned out all the time. The others are up at night. One field is right outside of the barn and that makes chores quick. The other pasture is a little further but its not bad.The barn and house are centrally located so it makes things easier. Its alsos easy to turn a truck and trailer around and I can pull up to the barn. i didnt have that before and its nice. Plus with the house close, if I need hot water i dont have to go far. I will say the one MUST have is lights for the run in where the horses are out 24/7. When you leave before dawn and get home after dark, you need to be able to see your horses in the light to check for cuts and things. The lights have come in handy.Another critical thing is good drainage in your run-in. It will get muddy really quick.

I walk to the barn, it is inside the pasture. I have 5 stalls or can open up 2 of them to make double stalls. 2 stalls have runs off them. Can use Alleyway as a "stall/run combo or can even use it as a 2 stall/run combo. Barn is 30x50. Big doors face North/South, runs are on the east side. Have round pen panels on both N&S ends. We rotate, riding horses are up during the day, out @ nite, feed twice a day. I want to put up a pen on the west side of the barn, N have a small stall for it too, but haven't gotten husband talked into it nor any money to do that, especially since I don't even have a "finished" tack room!!! Love my barn!!!!

I walk to the barn, it's not that far away (maybe 100'?) from our house. Small winter pasture/summer arena off the barn, and we have 1 large stall with dutch doors that the cows are currently in, and 4 standing stalls for the horses. The 3 big horses, 1 mini, and 2 calves run in and out. They were all together, but we have 1 adolescent Arabian that keeps picking on everyone except my mare, so the mare and him are currently in their own partition. It works well to partition that pasture off with round pen panels when needed.
Then we have a bigger grass pasture, about 8-9 acres, separated and rotated into 4, off to the right of the barn. The big pasture and small pasture are not currently connected, but we have had them connected in the past.
Generally I ride at night/evening, so that's when they come up anyway from the bigger pasture. It is easier to catch them when they are up for the winter, but I'd rather have them out on pasture when able and go get them then keep them up.

I walk to the barn, it is not too far from the house. My barn alley opens to the pasture and all my stalls have big pens that have gates that open to the pasture too.

Thanks for all the replies! The farm I grew up on and the last farm I lived on had the barn, pastures, and arena all within 100 feet or so from the house which was really convenient and allowed me to spend time at the barn exercising the horses, grooming them, or just general barn chores even if I only had 20 minutes to spend but the layout of the farm I live on now is much different and my pastures are close to 1/4 mile from my house at the back of our land. I have 4 and 5 year old kids so I usually ride the 4 wheeler to get the horses but since it takes so long to go get them and bring them to the barn I don't spend nearly as much time with them as I did when my pastures and barn were convenient to the house and I miss that a lot. I just wanted to ask on here to see if others barn and pastures were convenient to run out and spend 20 minutes with the horses or if they were farther away and inconvenient unless you had larger blocks of time to spend.

If you live in an area with high temps, plan for shade. My runs are on the east side of my barn so they are shaded in the afternoon.
