I have heard that a mare will produce a foal at the size she is capable to give birth to. I am wanting to breed my 12hh pony mare to a slightly larger stud in order to get bigger foals out of her. I'm only wanting to go to about a 13hh or maybe 14hh at the max height of a stud. I'm looking around for some studs that height and people are griping at me for wanting to breed her to a larger stud.
What are your honest opinions on this matter??

My mom had a red roan Hancock stallion that was every bit of 15.2. A lady brought a pony to her to have her bred. I am not sure of her height but she was shorter than 14h lol but very stocky built. My mom said the lady was crazy and told her that she was a little scared to breed him to her and didn't agree with it but the lady insisted. So my mom bred her and she had the baby with no problems and the colt ended up being at least 14.2-14.3...when the colt was 2 years nobody could believe that baby came out of her. Lol

I was taught in school that the dam's size determines size of foal at birth.  Mother nature's way of protecting the dam.  In the wild I doubt mares get much say in who the daddy is...

We bought a 41 inch Shetland pony mare who was bred. (We didnt' know it!)   The owners had put her out with a 17H thoroughbred stud for several years before this and nothing happened. They didn't think anything could happen!   Well, before we bought her, something happened!

She had a foal that was knee high when she was born.  She ended up being around 54 inches when she was grown.

I have had some questions similar to this too. Our mare is about 14.2hh and she has been bred to a few race bred studs. The two coming 4yr olds that we have out of her, by different studs, are at least 16.2 and growing! We have a coming 3yr old, and he's getting closer to 16hh everyday. We aren't sure what we want to breed her to because her foals end up being so stinking huge. They come easy, but grow like crazy. Her babies have been fairly successful on the track, so if anyone has any good advice it'd be much appreciated.

Here is her pedigree if that will help at all: http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/manets+lovenromance

What I would be more concerned about is the typical size of the STALLIONS offspring at birth. Some studs are known for producing large babies. Yes, "they" say a mare determines the size of the foal at birth, HOWEVER if that were truly the case there would never be foals that are to large to be delivered. Unfortunately, there ARE occasionally foals that are too large for the mare to deliver and they have to be cut out.

My husbands grandpa would breed a mare that was 40" or so to his 16H QH studs every year for some quarter type ponies. They were his best sellers every year.

A friend of mine used to breed her 12H pony mare to her 16.3H APHA stallion. Foal turned out to be around 13.2-14.2H. (somewhere in there, can't remember exactly, haha) I know he was NO bigger than 14.2 though lol

My mare is 14.3 and both of her colts are very big. Her 3 yr old is 16hh and as wide as he is tall. Her yearling is 15.1 at the hip. I was told by the lady who bred her that she would have big bay foals.....she has. Who knows how accurate one can be but she has been right so far. He first was almost 42" at birth. The sire was large for the first two but we shall see with the next because he isn't as large.
