I have a mare who fractured her coffin bone at the trainer's in early 2012. It breaks my heart because I should have just started riding her again myself and it never would have happened. I just hadn't rode much since I had my first daughter. Anyways, she was really sore for a long time and this spring she started acting much better. She acts sore off and on and doesn't play in the pasture much. I have her original xrays from when it first happened and will be getting more soon. I would really like to ride her again, even just trail riding. Is that something I will ever be able to do? Do shoes help? At this point is there anything else I should be worried about causing pain/limping? She's will be 7 next May.

What was the original diagnosis from the vet? Did they say she'd ever come sound or would she only he pasture sound?

If she's still showing signs of lameness almost two years after the injury my guess is she's probably only going to be pasture sound. New radiographs will tell you with more certainty what's going on and if further treatment would help.

Best of luck!!!

agree with above. Had a mare that did this just playing out in the pasture. We bar shoed and padded her up for a good 6 months. basically made a cast from the shoe and pad. and she was good to go the following season. Was the outside wing of a hind foot though so where might make a huge difference.

They said that is was the outside of the foot( not the joint area) and it was just a wait and see kind of deal.

One of VA's top (national level too) barrel horses fractured his coffin bone several years ago.  The horse has had excellent and consistent vet and farrier care and has healed and reentered competition with no loss of performance.  He won the Colonial National this year.

Yes, your horse can become sound depending on where the fracture is and how it healed.
