I just got the best news I've gotten 2 1/2 months! My father-in-law has been in the hospital since the first of October, moved to the veterans home just before Thanksgiving, then had to go for a pyschiatric eval (again) 2 weeks ago. We DID NOT want to return him to the veterans home, as we were not completely happy with his care there, and they've been hinting that we should find another place for him. We just got the phone call that he has been accepted in to a private nursing home, VA approved, just 25 miles from my house!!!
It is further for my MIL, BUT, the facility and staff are miles ahead of the VA home, as well as the private home nearest to her. We've spent the last week praying and praying that he'd be accepted into the new place. BEST CHRISTMAS PRESENT possible this year!!!!
Father in law has Parkinsons (caused by exposure to agent orange in Vietnam), and PD onset Dementia. He is 50% physically disabled from the PD, and 50% disabled with PTSD. The dementia has made it impossible for him to supress his PTSD, and now he has severe anxiety and paranioa, along with depression. It's been a rather frightening experience at times, and it's no where near over, but we feel we will now have him in a place that will not set him back, where he will be safe, and cared for where we cannot.
Thank you LORD for this good news, and now prayers for a safe transfer next week, and that he settles in well and will be as happy and comfortable as is possible.

So happy for you and your family.  This is such a hard thing for families to go through, glad you got the home you wanted for him.

Has he been service connected for the Parkinson's due to agent orange yet?

Yes, he is on 100% veterans disability, and his care is 100% paid, which is why we had to find a VA approved home. He is congnisant a good portion of the time, and it was his choice to go to the state veterans home because he thought being around other veterans he'd be more understood. Intead, he was isolated because very few of them are social, and it had a very sterile, hospital type feel. They wanted him to sit in a chair, or in front of the TV, and had a tab alarm on his bed and chair. With his anxiety, he cannot sit still, and every time the alarms went off he freaked out and had a PTSD episode.

The private home has done away with all most all restraints (he will be on a secure alzheimers wing), and he will be allowed to walk if he wants. There are no alarms except on the doors, which is locked with a code.

That is wonderful news.  My mom has Alzheimers and it's been a long road.  We've finally found a really, really nice place for her & it is making a difference.  She is happier, though still confused. But more smiles, the place is clean, people are nice...it makes a difference.
