Is it really beneficial? Would you use it on your horses, etc?

I think it's absolutely one of the best things you can have done to your horse. BUT, be aware there are many people going to less than quality training to be certified. There's a huge difference in the quality of therapists and you need to do your homework to know the difference. It's physically a very hard job when you do it right.

We have a guy that travels around here doing massage therapy.  He does a great job and I agree its very intense if done correctly.  There are many I've seen do it that don't put much into it so the horse gets very little out of it, I don't waste my time and money.   I do have one mare that I've had worked on twice and both times she seems to get sensory overload so not sure I'll have her worked on again.  My older gelding that gets stiff really benefits from the massage.

Massage can be just as beneficial to the well being of our horses as it is for us. The main thing is to find a good EMT and that can be very tricky!

Agree with everything posted above.  Horses don't have hands to rub their sore and aching muscles themselves- they really appreciate it when we can help them out with that.

I have used straight chiro and massage/chiro on my horses and found that my horses get the most out of the massage/chiro. At the end of the session they are so relaxed and because he works their muscles and softens them up they are a lot easier to adjust.

I think if you find the right massage therapist, it can be a great benefit to you horses.. they can have muscle soreness without being out.

I am a fan of the Masterson Method and have started using it on my own. It works with the horse to get them to release the tension on their own with as minimal assistance as necessary. I think sometimes people think they are getting more bang for their buck when they see someone really getting in there and working the muscles hard when in actuality if they are pushing too hard the horse puts up their resistance and refuse to release the tension. The biggest thing is to watch your horse while and after they are worked on and see how they react.

I so agree with you! I have had bilateral carpal tunnel surgery thanks to my years of working on horses. I believe the tension broken by the massage will allow for a much better adjustment and the chance of it holding for several weeks to months is better. I worked with a man on the East Coast for several years what he taught me was invaluable.  Uncle Ed had me work with Laird Burke and when Butch Mayhew moved to our area I added some new techniques. I have stepped away and let others work on my own when I feel that I'm to close and not making a difference.

Masterson Method is a fantastic way to really connect with your horse...their reactions can vary from amazing to yep that was ok...depending on where they are sore or tense....they will show you.
I have the book, and Dvd, and would like to take a wknd seminar if there ever was one in reasonable driving distance.
One thing I like is Less is more with the Masterson Method...amazing reactions just with "Air Gap" pressure..

Where did you go to school? I would LOVE to get into massage/chiro on horses but I’m afraid I don’t have the muscle to really get in and do any good,  I’m 5’ and 105lbs and when my horses start leaning into me I don’t have the “Uumph” to hold steady like my chiro guy does.

I agree with those who have mentioned the Masterson Method.  Jim Masterson worked with the USET for years and developed a system to use on horses that includes massage, chiro, myofacial, cranio-sacral, and some other modalities he discovered.  The best part of it is that now he wants to teach others how to use his method on their own horses, and once you learn it, there is no more worrying about when you can find someone to work on your horse.  I've been doing Masterson for a little over a year and am now a ceritified practitioner- it's a great feeling when you can help your horse when they need it, as they need it.  I have literally felt my horse being a little stiffer on one side than the day before, got off, did a little poll release and gotten back on- and continued the session with a happier horse.  This part is invlauable- before I knew Masterson I'd be running for a tie-down or a different bit- but not anymore.  Love it and hope that many more decide to learn the Method as well!

I got the most out of Jack Meagher, he was working on my cousins horse and took me under his wing. I would fly out and stay with him for a couple of weeks. To have formal training, I highly suggest either Mimi Porter if she is still teaching or Equinology out in Cali. I did the Equissage course and don't recommend it, its just a week course and it is a "print out type massage". I would love to take a Rolfing course with Joseph Freeman up in Washington.

I've had tiny chiropractors do wonders on horses. Don't let your size hold you back.
I had a family friend take a week long chiro course with me (he is a retired human chiropractor) I've had him come over and help me; still teaching me something every visit. I help him back with his race horses that he partners on with his brother.

True deep massage work takes some muscle power, if you feel your limited try to get with Mimi Porter and learn all the many modalities that she teaches. There's not a lot of people that can run the equipment, we need more therapist that have had a proper education.

I do want to mention Essential Oils, I just began using oils this year and was a huge skeptic until about a week ago. I did a horse for a young lady that has been very off for the last year. The horse had so much release and when we were done she traveled much better. A week after the session she ran her in an unhospitable type pen. The mare made a run that she was capable of and looks like she held together post run.

I do essential oil therapies, and I am a Reiki healer as well.  Horses respond so well to any of these therapies.  It is amazing what simple "hands on" can do.  I pulled one out of the paster dead lame on the left hind, did Reiki for an hour, she walked sound, so I rode her in the arena, and moved sound.  Reikied again that night, ran her the next day.  I don't rule much out, but I do try to "read" the person offering the healing just to see if they know what they are doing, or if its a scam.

I always have my horse massaged a few days before the chiro. It helps keep the adjustments.

My gray mare LOVED getting massaged.

If you can't get to Mimi- go to Deborah Powell at Matrix Therapy- they are friends from way back and Deborah sells Mimi her equipment.  Deborah's site is www.therapyproducts.net.  There are a few articles Mimi did for Deborah's book, "Microcurrent for Horses and Other Vital Therapies You Should Know," I would love to meet Mimi someday, Deborah sells and teaches how to use the equipment that Mimi uses, and they have worked with iontophoresis together more than anyone.

I am certified in Equissage by Equissage, Texas. I also incorporate some of the Masterson method. I'm excited to spend some time in January with one of the top vets in the country who has embraced massage and acupressure. I know that I'll never stop learning.

It's so exciting to watch the horse as he/she relaxes and releases. Each horse has its own way of releasing and accepting the massage. Each only tolerates a certain amount of pressure.

Massage improves circulation and pushes toxins from muscles. I can find and relieve hotspots in your horse. Lots of reasons and benefits.
