I've always done my taxes online through E-File.  I don't own property, or have anything crazy or complicated to deal with on my taxes.  Pretty basic.  People at work were saying how they have someone do their taxes and they get really good refunds.  Is this something I should look into?  How much are you paying if you have someone do it for you?

I hear all the time about people getting insane refunds but I have to question if they are either A) actually filing taxes correctly and truthfully or B) paying in way too much during the year. Ideally you should barely get a refund back, it's just giving them interest free use of your money all year. We have done our own and we have had an accountant do ours. We will be switching to one that specializes in Ag this year.

Eta: ours are not very complicated at all, not much for itemized deductions or special situations. To do both State and Federal it was a couple hundered bucks.

Our saint of an accountant.

ETA: It costs us around $1000 every year for him to do our taxes. But we own two agriculture businesses. So our taxes are definitely much more involved than just an ordinary situation.

Local acct, been doing ours for years. He said everyone uses the same computer programs so it doesn't matter who you go to, result will be the same. Idk, we don't itemize or own our own business and usually break even between state and federal with one minor child.

Yeah I'm just trying to figure out how they get that much back!  They have to be doing something dishonestly I would think....I typically get $1000-1500 back.

i've been doing taxes for over 30 yrs - 20 on my own.  To get the "huge" refunds, most of the time, they are getting the Earned Income Credit.  It is based on your income (has to be somewhere below $40,000.........have several children, under age 18 - can claim Child credit and maybe have kids in college.  The EIC is larger for over 3 children in the home.  i wouldn't EVER want to get caught cheating to get a higher refund...........the IRS are lot like my son's pitbulls - - doesn't play well with others!!  Any questions, be glad to help!

We use a CPA. Costs me $65, has for years, no matter how many W2's I take her (one I year I had 5 W2's across 3 states!).

I like the security of knowing it's done right and knowing that I have someone to go to if the IRS wants to dispute that it's been done right.

I also claim "1" on my I-9 despite being single with no children. I pay a bit more into the system, but I generally always get a little bit back, I've never had to pay.
