has anyone ridden in an elephant seat? How do they hold up and are they pretty slick or are they sticky? Also...where do they get the elephant hide?

I have an elephant hide in the Pozzi I ride.  My saddle is 3 yrs old and the seat is not worn at all.  Very durable.  It is not slick either.  I could refer to it as "sticky" but that is more due to the fact that the stirrup leathers are roughout.  I really like it but it was an expensive option.

Can't answer where they come from, but it makes me sad. . .elephants are such an intelligent and emotional animal (they mourn for days/weeks over a lost loved one), I can't bring myself to support their slaughter (even if for cull purposes). JMHO. . .

I am on the fence about that issue, not to derail the thread. On one hand, culling the old/sick/non-producing is a generally good practice. On the other hand, the massacre of the herds (cut ~50% through the 20th century) for their ivory is sickening. Luckily the numbers have been growing again due to attempts at proper management.

Back to the OP: I have two pairs of elephant boots & LOVE them. I wear them every day. I would love an elephant seat, as well. The saddle I would replace the seat with elephant on probably isn't high enough quality to do so, but if I ever get to the high-dollar/high-quality saddles then I'll probably spend the extra dough for an elephant seat.

Elephant is a very comfortable, but durable hide. Where did you find ladies elephant hide boots? I've been searching with no luck!

I found the seat to be too thick and slick for my preference.

Look for higher end brands (ie Lucchese). A pal of mine snagged a pair at a boot place in MO a couple months ago, Kleinschmidt's.

More recently, Anderson Bean. 10 years back it was a Rios of Mercedes (also AB) specialty brand for a local western store.

I've had a pair of Anderson beans from the factory I got for $200 that have been my sole riding boots since 2010. Had them resoled twice and one just recently started splitting. Don't think it would have if I oiled them. I will get an elephant seat in a saddle if I order one. I rode in a fully tooled Double J roping saddle with one and it had plenty of grip.

Thanks for the info, everyone. I was thinking about getting one on my next saddle but do not support poaching or (I thought maybe zoos sold the skins after the animals died) unethical practices. I still am not sure whether I would get one just because the elephant IS an intelligent animal. Kind of like skinning a dolphin and using it on a saddle.

Thanks, y'all! :-)

I can't say for sure but I believe that the hides used for boots & such are not from poached elephants, unless they're skinned after the fact when they're found by authorities. The poached animals are killed for their tusks, not their skin. From what I've read, the skin used is from harvested/culled elephants.
