Last night when I went to put my water buckets in my trailer I felt something slimy. It was dark but I noticed something dark on my finger so I grabbed my flashlight and saw it was a thin string of blood not even a fingertip long. Shined the flashlight on the bucket and saw where he blew his nose and there was an area of clear discharge that had just a little bit of blood in it. I'm talking specks not even bigger than a pea. I checked his nostrils and didn't see any blood at all. Now I'm driving myself crazy about if he is bleeding or not. I know they say scope right away. Would tomorrow be too far out? Obviously vets are closed today. Could it just be from being on hay this winter plus the insanely dry air? He blew off third bad and ran almost 1/2 a second slower his 2nd run. I also noticed he was breathing a little heavier than normal between our runs. I guess I'm looking for thoughts and opinions on how you would handle this if it was your horse?

Some horses never bleed out, some bleed alot and some bleed a little - mine bleeds bad so I know when he bled

I would get him scoped - Even if its a few days because the blood doesnt disappear overnight in the trachea - plus if he bled he would need to go on antibiotics to prevent lung infection - its not worth the risk

My vet charges like $100-150 to scope - cant remember right off hand - its worth looking at

I'd probably try to get him scoped, because I'd worry myself to death if I didn't. It could be just our crazy weather or even he poked himself with a piece of hay but if you can better safe, probably. IE: bump for you

I would get him scoped and on antibiotics per vet..  Mine would hang up just a tad on the 1st and 2nd, blow off 3rd and flat run off, no brakes etc... I had scoped, gave time off while on antibiotics, Animal Element Detox and Immune, intense exercise program, did not run him for several months etc etc

I had mine scoped two days later one time and way down there was a few specs of left over blood, I started him on SMZs right away just to prevent an infection.

2 weeks minimum off, then back to light riding, 30 days is best but everyone says different.

Lasix is the ONLY preventative, I have tried everything on the market and quite frankly I'm over doing trial and error and risking his health.

Pick your barrel races wisely, I save my bleeder for the big shows.

I would surely have him scoped if you can. Find out where and why he is bleeding. Some vets have you run them down a track or something and check them. You will have to give him at least 30 days off and antibiotics to prevent lung infection. Key is to make sure the lungs heal before running again. Every time your horse bleeds it creates scar tissue which doesnt have the lasticity therefore making a horse bleed worse and worse. I personally have a bad bleeder that also developed allergies and was showing heave signs. He was getting worse and costing me a fortune to keep him running. I was contemplating just retiring him.   I was suggested to try Lung Aid by Choice of Champions. I thought at this point i have nothing to lose. It worked so well for him and it saved me $$$$$ on the meds he was prescribed. That was over 4 years ago and he is healthier now than i think he has ever been. I was so impressed with his results i became a distributor so i could get a discount and buy the other products. Now i have all my horses on it. Well worth the money spent. The Lung Aid is AWESOME stuff.     If your interested in trying it.
