LAC - 2014-01-23 10:39 AM IMO just riding in a cutting saddle is great because the seat is flatter with no padding which allows you to feel your horse better, and for your horse to feel you better. For example, my horse kept running past the first barrel. I went and rode with a cutting friend who felt that my horse actually couldn’t feel me sit down when it was time to rate because my barrel saddle didn’t allow for much movement. I rode in a cutting saddle for a while and worked on rolling my hips back and my horse immediately started turning the first better. I'm not sure that I would want to run in one because of the large seat size but I love to just ride in them when working my horse or riding a colt!

Exactly my point.  If you can't roll your hips, you cannot properly cue the horse.

One of my mounted shooting friends swears by her ranch cutter, she says she can't make herself ride in anything else. I've sat in some, and we bought my husband a used NRS ranch cutter for Christmas, but I feel like I need/want a higher cantle to hold my butt in when my horse pushes off the rundown barrel. He's so powerful, and I don't have a free hand on the saddle horn to hold on with because it's holding a gun! I need all of the help I can get lol.

I started Mounted Shooting in a cutting saddle and I too found I was WAY behind my horse in sharp turns and barrel turns! Thus I now ride a Circle Y ancient barrel saddle from the 90s ... I'm coveting a KL Quick shot ... A friend let me borrow hers for a shoot and I AM IN LOVE :)

I haven't barrel raced in a cutting saddle simply because I haven't barrel raced very long, but I learned to cut before I started to barrel race (I'm still learning, lol) and I LOVE LOVE LOVE my cutting saddle. The best saddle I have. If someone wanted to give me $10,000 for it I wouldn't let it go. It's a Roohide, which are very nice and worth the money! I love how free the stirrups are and I like that I can feel my horse and they respond better in my opinion but I don't think I could race in it because it's a 16" and I ride in a 14" barrel saddle! I like to feel secure so I'm just not sure how that'd work with barrel racing so I can't really give you much advice, but I do have to say that I loveeee cutting saddles

One of my all time favorite saddles was a Carl Ammerman with a modified Buster Welch Tree.

When I ride in hard, flat seat cutters, I feel like I'm riding a barrel...only ridden in two so limited experience. I do like the open room in the seat. When I borrowed my friend's cutter last month, my daughter loved it because we could ride double in the same seat. Lol

Now, I own and LOVE my ranch cutter saddle! My go-to saddle and was planning on using it this summer when I start my gelding on the pattern. It's my favorite.
