For pictures 3 days old. On a bomb proof not moving with Daddy and Uncle. To go on a little easy trail ride 6 weeks put her in a sling and rode bomb proof gelding again. Looking back on it I wouldn't have done the trailriide. The horse could have tripped stumbled fallen etc. something completely out of my hands or his could have potentially happened. it was a foolish unnecessary risk. IMO. However With my first born we had a mini and cart and I used that put her in a sling and we would ride for hours. I would do that again without a doubt. The mini was a bomb proof trotting machine. It probably wasn't any safer but I felt better about controlling things that could happen and we were much closer to the ground. It's going to be completely up to you and what YOU feel safe doing. You know your horses and your baby. Now we put the kids in front of us when we cool out good minded horses and have been doing that since they were about a year old. And they always have a well fitting helmet. JMO!

When they were holding their heads on their own. In a sling in the front and then when they were about 9-10 months old they would just sit in front of me. They'd go all day, started riding by themselves, being ponied, when they were able to hold on and knew how to keep themselves in the middle of the saddle. Made them start riding bareback when they were 4, partly because I didn't want to saddle their horses up for a whole 15 minutes of their attention and its also a good lesson on balance and paying attention.

My first was on a horse with me as soon as he could sit up on his own.  By my second, I realized that there's no hurry so she was about 20 months.  She's my rider, my son could care less, although he did learn to ride before he decided it wasn't his thing.

at the very least, they should have control of their head.

My Nieces were on a horse once they were able to hold their heads up. Only on for a short time and on a very safe horse. They were both about 18 months when they were able to hold themselves on and they ride by themselves with someone walking the horse and beside them or with me on them but they are starting to not want me on with them! Lol

Was wondering the same thing just the other day! I am dying to get my little one on a horse, but wasn't sure how young was to young.

My son was 6 months old when he went for his first ride. It was with his dad, in an arena on the same horse that he has been riding ever since. Colby is now 7 and runs barrels and team ropes on the mare. He was 3 before he started riding by himself and even then the mare would only move if my husband or I were walking or riding next to him. This is his first ride (if I can figure out how to attach a picture). I don't think that he was as excited about it as the rest of us were.

Our little guy was 2 months old the first time he was up, but he only sat on the horse with me holding him on.  It was under controlled circumstances and on a very trustworthy horse.  He is not quite 21 months old now and rides with one of us or is led around with one of walking right beside him.  He loves to ride, but 5 minutes is plenty long for him.
