Veteran Posts: 211 Location: Florissant CO	I need help from my fellow equestrians. I have chosen to write an argumentative paper on horse slaughter for my college English class. I do know that this a topic that is a massive argued on both sides, and those who have opinions are very passionate about it. In order to use your opinions for this paper I will need to know a few things other than your personal opinion to the question I will ask. I will firstly need approval from you to use your name, and how you are experienced in this field of knowledge. So in other words what is your equine back ground/resume. Then I will need a clear and direct argument that addresses the question of: Has the over breeding of horses in the United States brought back the need for American slaughter houses to re-open? If you would like you can post on here of message me if you feel like you would like to keep your statements more private. Please keep from bashing other people and their opinions on a personal level. I may also have additional questions that I will ask of you. Thank you.

Elite Veteran Posts: 1035 Location: TN	I wrote an article on horse slaughter/unwanted horses in college too. Try calling the Unwanted Horse Coalition - a lady there was really nice and gave me some awesome quotes. They're trying to help deal with the abundance of unwanted horses in the U.S. Also, to get different perspectives I called a local horse rescue to get their take on the issue. It might be good if you could get a good mix of sources to help support your argument: breeders, activists, breed officials (like AQHA), and competitors like the awesome folks on BHW of course! Ms. Manners Posts: 1820 Location: Oklahoma	I would look up the stance taken by the AAEP as well as the major breed registries. You also want the opinon of the HSUS, PETA and other groups "like them" to provide a balanced counter argument.

It is the Government Accountability report about the cessation of horse processing. http://www.gao.gov/products/GAO-11-228 This page has the highlights, but above the report there is a link to the full report. This is from 2011, so it might be a little outdated, but should still provide some good information.
