Teaching my 4 year old the barrel pattern and going to the second barrel he is on the wrong lead (should be on left he is on right) I can not figure out how to make him swap, he is pretty broke away from the barrels and does flying lead changes but will not go to the barrel on the left lead or switch to turn it.... I'm literally pounding my head against the wall.

When I am first starting one on the pattern I like to do a simple lead change to teach them that they are supposed to change leads.

Here is another recent thread about lead changes that has a good description of over-turning the first and using a counter-arc to get the lead change leaving the first barrel.

I just do a simple lead change too.  It hasn't negatively affected any of my horses.  When they get going at a pretty good clip, they figure it out without the breakdown in between.

If your horse does flying lead changes, then cue him to change leads a stride after you have finished your first.

When I break down to do the simple lead change I like to leave the barrel a stride or two because I want to keep them driving out of the barrel. Break down, switch leads and go on. I think you're setting yourself up for long-term problems if you don't fix this now. Never let your horse turn the barrel in the wrong lead. My mares both change leads leaving the first barrel and my gelding changes after a stride or two. But I don't want them changing at the barrel because a lot of times this leads to shoulder dropping and slicing.
