My paint mare is a bleeder, Inflammatory airway disease. I'm against Lasix use due to adverse effects long term(that's the pharmacist in me). I have had success with aerochamber and using albuterol MDI and Flovent MDI with it (but even being a pharmacist and buying at cost the ventolin is about $35/200 doses and the Flovent is about $205/120doses(at 10 doses twice a day it gets pricey). Recently, I am using the Spectra Laserwrap. I wrap the lung meridians, located up the inside of front legs to chest. This laserwrap is portable and wearable, I wrap my mare 2 hours before riding or working her on the pattern and no cough! I even skip days and still no cough. And she is alert and ready to roll. Before the wrap she always coughed when I started trotting and thru the workout, now no cough, which to me means no stress on lungs. It's easier to use then the pen product cause you just have to be "close" to the meridians and acupressure points by wrapping area. Check out SpectraTherapy, laser wraps--on here with a banner ad...works on the horse, dog and you! I slept in mine last night after my colt laid down on me while saddled and practicing barrels. I still have the bruises but am feeling okay enough to ride three and clean stalls tonight. Oxygenating the blood and increasing circulation thus increasing healing makes sense for the bleeders. I hope that when we oxygenate the blood enough the stress on the lungs that make them bleed with not occur so we can skip the kidney killing Lasix and after treatment and time off with more drugs like sulfa going thru the system (which leads to b vitamin deficiency and on and on). Give them a call--John or Sharon I've sent them pics of my mare with her lung meridians wrapped in the laser---so easy to wrap the lung meridian and go off and ride another..JMHO Plus the laserwrap will never "test" with all the new drug regulations popping up.

I have a bleeder and I've found that the T.H.E PulmonEZ works awesome. She never bled and consistently fired hard while on it. And she was a bleeder that bled like a stuck hog. I'm a true believer in it and will have all my horses on it when they are running. Let me know if your interested in more info or purchasing some, I have it for  25% off.

Lung Aid is an absolute must in my opinion for a bleeder. My horses running career was almost ended. I found Lung Aid and he has made a full recovery and healthier now than I believe he has ever been. I was so shocked with how well it worked for him I became a dist. so I could put all my horses on it and get it cheaper. LOVE this stuff. IF your interested in it please use coupon code "cockk" in promo section at www.choiceofchamps.com for 10% off and free shipping. You wont be disappointed!

I guess it depends on exactly why your horse bleeds. My horse has no allergies, no respiratory problems, he just bleeds now and again from running hard.

I read about it awhile and talked to some vets and foundthese things that worked for me.

Increasing the fat in the horse's diet will help the tissue of the blood vessels be more pliable, therefore less easy to burst. There are things in the diet that help skin and hooves, many of those same things are good for all tissue. I upped my fat in the feed. I was feeding a 3-4% and upped it to 8%. Now I've found a new feed that is 12% fat and it's great. The other thing fat does is this. Energy derived from fat lasts longer and is more even. Energy derived from sugar, starch protein is more like a sugar high where they're sometimes hard to manage then crash. That made me wonder if some days my horse might have bled because he was all wound up and being an idiot. When I changed his feed, a lot of that went away. Also if your feed has more fat, the horse's body can use the protein for muscle building, so fat helps hair, skin, etc, and it will help your horse put on muscle.

I use Horseshoer's secret because it has omegas and other things good for tissue too.

I use Lasix but only 2.5-3 cc. I was told to use 5, but I started with a half because Lasix is a diuretic, kinda like caffeine and it works by pulling fluid out of the body. So basically, you give the Lasix a couple hours before a run, he pees a lot, and he's sort of a little dehydrated. This works by taking those blood vessels that would burst during a run and drying them out, shriveling them up sort of, so they are less likely to burst. I was worried about a horse getting too dry, so I cut the dose, gave it earlier, and always had water waiting for him right after we ran. If I waited too long, he wouldn't be thirsty, so I would run, walk him out a little, pull off his boots, then walk to the trailer and let him drink about half a bucket. Walk some more, drink some more.
On Lasix though, it will kind of hype a horse a little, so at first when they aren't used to it, they may wash out and not run. Just like if you drank a pot of coffee and you felt shaky and weak. Just keep using it and after a few runs they will get used to it and it won't bother them any more. A lot of horses clock faster on it.

Oxy-Gen is an aid that works by making it easier for the body to get oxygen to the muscles and brain and all that. It doesn't hype a horse up. They can think better and react better. I guess it makes their body more efficient. that can also help because the body doesn't have to work so hard. THe first time I used it, my horse walked up the alley dead level, and outclocked himself in a pen we had run in for years. It was weird because he's usually hard to get in the alley and runs by barrels sometimes. Even though it's not for bleeders necessarily, I really like that stuff. There are all kinds for different horses, worth looking at their site and reading about it.

My horse had bled inside a few times before he ever bled out his nose. He had a slight respiratory infection that I had to treat because of the bleeding. If they aspirate the blood, sometimes that happens. It doesn't always mean your respiratory problem caused the bleeding, but the bleeding can cause the respiratory problem. Something only you will know about your own horse.
