not finishing all their grain at one time, standing stretched out, weight loss, bad attitude sometimes, decrease in performance, can be sensitive to touch on the sides of their gut, can buck when riding when you kick, becomes cinchy.

Give your horse no grain for two weeks, only alfalfa pellets, rice bran and a little flax if you have supplements that he must get. Have your grass hay tested for its carb level. If it is high get another hay source. If during the later part of the second week this horse seems better you should seriously consider the horse as having ulcers. Treatment with omeprazole products for stomach ulcers and ranitidine for HG ulcers and other HGA products is needed. You had great suggestion by the others.

Im on day 3 of ulcer otc with my mare to see if it helps her!

She dosnt eat well. She has always been a hard keeper, and she is turning 6 this year. She is sucked up in the gut, I call it the greyhound look, always looks in shape even if I dont ride her. She is crabby at times, sometimes if I touch her a certain way she makes a noise and acts as if she is in pain. If she is in heat its amplified, ive always thought it was just her.. but more research Im thinking, its ulcers. Sometimes she throws a fit and is sluggish if I ask for speed.
So far I keep her teeth up, and just did a powerpak, and now treating for ulcers in hopes to at least is easier to keep weight on without feeding her like a 30 year old senior horse with no teeth lol.

I thought ranitidine was also only for stomach ulcers. ?? It reduces the about of acid produced in the stomach. Hindgut ulcers are thought to be caused by NSAIDS, parasites, and undigested starches and sugars reaching the hindgut and producing lactic acid.

Ranitidine has shown results in HG ulcers as well. I can't remember which study it was that I read it from. You are correct as well, I believe the major factor is HGA due to starch overload. WE GOT TO QUIT FEEDING SO MUCH GRAIN unless of course they need it.

Let me know how your horse is doing at the end of the month.

I agree.............

Scoping will catch gastric ulcers but it won't catch ulcers in the colon/gut because the scope doesn' go down that far.

Colon ulcers have a lot of the same symptoms as gastric ulcers but they are diagnosed and treated differently.
