Location: Somewhere between raising hell and Amazing Grace | I would venture to say that at least half our board buddies have used Dex as an IM injection with a horse at least once in their life. Either for performance or medical reasons. I know I have, more then once. For snake bites, injuries, breathing problems.....
Just totally random but if injecting a horse is as painful as getting an injection on yourself, I vow to massage my horse for an hour afterwards from now on!!!!!
Holy OUCH! It doesn't last long but it's like someone is pounding on your over and over again for about five minutes :)
I wonder if it feels the same with a horse? |

:) so do you think it hurts their tongues :) I've used it several times over the last 15 years and I've never noticed a horse acting like it hurt but then who knows....I was just a lil surprised today :) |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I've only used it as a topical. It is awesome at getting rid of scar tissue. I mix it with DMSO around a knot on the bone from a scrape and it may take a week or 2, but it does get rid of it. |

Location: Alberta | I had to use it on my 4 year old around Christmas time. I'm not sure what he did to himself but he was hurting really bad so we rushed him to the vet and he was on Dexamethasone for a few days he never seemed sore at the injection sites but it sure helped make him feel better. He was the first horse that I have ever given it to. |

If you have to get another shot of dex, ask the doc to put a local freezing agent in the same syringe with the dex |

Oh it didn't hurt going in! It took about 45 seconds then kind of spread :) "IF" I ever need another one I sure can ask but I'm hoping I don't. This was definitely a very abnormal situation for me. Here in MO the healthcare is completely different then anywhere I have lived. I started having "seizures" in my left hip/lower back and nothing is helping them. I have to wait until March to see a specialist around here.....today it happened after we got done playing racquetball and some soldiers had to help me up off the floor. No fun :( Doc at the ER thinks its more in the hip area then my back but no clue as to whats cuasing it. So a dex shot then a five day regimen of narcotics and robaxin..... |

The lidocaine won't really work right away but will work when you need it.
From my own personal experience I wonder if it is your sciatic. Have you had a massage lately, or seen chiro, acupuncture?
I wish you no more pain |

Never heard this, what ratio do you use? Thanks, I have one to try this on. |

Years ago I had a young foal get stepped on and it made a bump on his bone. Other than the initial limping from soreness he was sound. Vet said to take a syringe and needle, pull some out of the bottle and mix it with some kind of topical cream (whatever you prefer), in a seperate clean container. Just rub it on the bump a couple times a day using a clean paint brush or gloved hands. If I remember right it only took a week to go away. We kept that horse and ranched on him until he was about 6. Never lame.
Then my show horse kept scraping and bumping the inside of his forearm, just above his knee. I have no idea what he was hitting it on, but it would nearly be healed and he would do it again. It finally haired over and left a knot. I asked my local vet about using the Dex again and he suggested mixing it with DMSO. It took a good 2 weeks, but it went away as well. Definitley clean the area, use gloved and a clean brush since using DMSO. This 2nd vet didn't really know alot about it but said it wouldn't hurt anything. For ratio, I use about tablespoon of DMSO and maybe 4cc of Dex. Not a lot and I have to remix often, but I think it is better that way than making a bunch and letting it sit. |

Location: The end of the Earth, SE AR | I get dex shots when I have bad sinus infections and they don't hurt at all. There's a human drug name for the dex us horse people use but according to my pharmacist, its the same thing. I have gotten dex shots from the doctor's office and from my husband and neither of the hurt, in fact I cannot even feel the ones my husband gives me. Also, do not go by the dex expiration date. My doctor said if kept in a cool controlled environment, the bottle last more than 5 years past the date. And you do not need to give extra in case you think its lost its potency, it doesn't. |

Maybe it's not normal to hurt then. Figure I was in the ER after two random soldiers had to pick me up off the floor and then it took me another hour to get mobile enough to even make it to the ER :) So I was in bad shape even walking in. ER doc didn't even "examine" me. I couldn't sit down and it was obvious it hurt....just listened to me and offered the injection and five days of oxycontin and robaxin. I followup with other docs later this month and next. |

| TIFF this all sounds like your sciatic nerve. I was having the exact same things going on before my 4th and 5 th back surgeries. My nerves were getting pinched off causing me to fall. There's times I could not walk. I still have permanent nerve damage from it. Sounds exactly like what I have gone through and hope you get answers soon. |

What did they do to help yours?
The right side of my lower back locks up sometimes. When it locks, I can't move. It feels like a fist is clenching my spine and radiates down my right leg. It's gotten much worse over the last year. Thought I was going to fall off when it did it last week while I was loping my horse. Weird things seem to trigger it. I've been on muscle relaxants, hydrocodone, and lots of advil for it... Finally went for an mri last week, kinda freaked out as to what they're going to find. |

It might be or just something stupid. This has all become so routine for me that I'm used to it. But after the pregnancy and miscarriage it's gotten a thousand times worse |
