This is a genuine question. Why did we ever stop barrel racing at the Olympics? Why couldn't we go back there now? Especially with so many other countries that do it now.

I am not 100% sure of the process to make it an Olympic sport but I think either 22 or 25 countrys have to want the sport in or want to participate. (or something like that

I believe that the only time barrel racing was part of the winter Olympics is when the games are held here. It has never been officially a part of the Olympics schedule.

Canada and USA are the only two nations that offered rodeo as the Olympics.

This is an interesting question.  I, for one, would love to see it.  I do know that America, Canada, Brazil, Austraila, New Zealand and Italy does it.  I believe that Germany and England also has some folks starting there as well.   Might have to ask a friend of mine, who judges all over the world, what she has seen.

Ok here is what I found out.  That there is barrel racing all over Europe.  It's also big in Japan and China as well.  There is also many countries in South America that does it as well.  so I think the country intrest just might be covered.

Reining will become and Oplympic event before barrels will. You have to have XX number of countries that do it and I believe the event has to be sanctioned with the USET (or something like that).

Among other qualifications, "The Olympic Charter indicates that to be accepted, a sport must be widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in no fewer than 40 countries and on three continents."

Olympic equestrian sports are governed internationally by the FEI.  If barrel racing fell under FEI rules, it would be a whole new ball game.

Β I thought rodeo was only an exhibition event in Canada one year. When was it ever in the Olympics otherwise? Someone posted it was an event when the Olympics was held in the U.S.. I guess I don't remember that. I do remember reining. So anyone know for sure?

Yes, Salt Lake City, cowboys/cowgirls qualified from circuit finals to get into the select amount of spots for the Olypmics. They decided to try it again since it was such  a success in Calgary.....from what I've read....

This is exactly what I thought too. We would see reining first. It seems to have a larger following in other countries.

Yep Reining first - that is why Australia has joined FEI for reining. All I can say is the affiliation has made a sport that was affordable for entry level competitors a nightmare to participate in. The costs are astronomocal and have turned off so many competitors old and new.
Reining now in Australia is unaffordable for everyday people with little if any reward. The entries and fees associated with one run are climbing and there is usually no prize money for weekend shows.

Such a shame to see. We were avid reiners and my hubby was making a mark as a trainer in the  two years we seriously competed with RA - he was making top ten of Australia lists etc but now we cannot afford to participate. Also  as much as we love the sport - we cannot encourage client's to buy a futurity prospect or go reining when there are so few chances for making any money.

It is now a rich man's sport which is a massive shame.
If I won the lottery I would be at a reining show every weekend lol.
