I would like to take my lil sis to the Derby for her birthday this summer. Can anyone give me some tips on what races, days, times, boxes, tickets, favorites sites, etc to go to or buy tickets for? I'm completely clueless and don't know the Lousiville area etc, so I feel lost trying to go about this myself. Appreciate it!

If you come into Louisville on 65, it is on the north side and well marked along the interstate. Very easy to get to. You must see the museum there. Full of derby history! There are several big farms located around the area, too. Don't know if any allow visitors anymore, but would be worth checking. I'm only about 5 hours from there but haven't been for years now. The derby itself is first Sat. in May and hard to get seats for, but you can sure try! Otherwise, they usually let you go to the infield but it's (to me anyway) hard to see the race and lots of partying people. Not my idea of watching the races all day! There are usually 8 or 9 races going on with of course the derby the big one to see! Wish I knew more to help you!

The infield is a huge party area. Lots of drinking and some nudity just to forewarn you. But if you like a good loud party. It's fun!

I live about 20 miles outside Louisville, but work about 5 miles from the track. I've never been to the Derby because I'm a big snob and won't do the infield, but can't afford box seats... haha!

If you want to buy tickets you may want to do that now. Derby sells out very quick. Kentuckyderby.com may have some tickets left.

The Derby Muesum is not open Derby Day, so plan accordingly. Oaks is a really fun day to go to, tickets are more available and cheaper. It's the day before Derby, so you still get all the Derby action.

I can recommend some killer spots to eat, and some things to do in Louisville. Just let me know your tastes and how long you are going to stay. Louisville is an awesome place during Derby.

Oh my Gosh you have to go the Rib Tavern and eat it's great and they have the best Strawberry Daquari's ever. Go to the Kentucky horse park. By all means go the infield, I got to see streaker's when I was there I made my Mom go with me to the infield and she was OMG she had never seen streaker's either. Go to the Peagasus parade! Have fun!!

We went in '06 & I planned an entire week.  We went to Keeneland, watched morning workouts (just happened to meet Steve Asmussen there and get his autograph), and ate at the track kitchen for breakfast.  Lanes End and 3 Chimneys were welcoming visitors on one day and we went.  You might call or check their websites to see if they are offering any visiting hours.  We went to the Museum and Kentucky Horse Park.  We also watched the parade on Thursday.

FYI - on the Thoroughbred farm visits, you need to call and make an appointment for a tour. You might want to do that now also. Lexington is about an hour and 15 minutes from Churchill. I would stay in the Bluegrass Park area, or Shelbyville. That's about halfway from Louisville to Lexington, if you wanted to visit both places.
