My husband accepted a job at AG Power John Deere and is going to be a field tech. He is going to be based out of the Texarkana store but we don't have to live close to their since he will be dispatched from the house. We are on the search for a small town that has great schools and a great community. I can work anywhere but I like working in the western stores. We are on the search for a small average and a 3 bed house. Doesn't have to b anything fancy. I just don't know where to start since I am not familiar with Texas. He will b covering mostly the Red River Valley area and on into Louisiana and Arkansas. Thank u everyone for any input. It is greatly appreciated.

I don't have a recommendation but pay a really close watch on schools.  We moved from E TX a couple years ago closer to Dallas and drugs/teen pregnancy/crime etc. were rampant.

School ratings are public so you can always look those up. I feel like New Boston is a small town with decent schools and I've heard dekalb isn't that bad. Im from Gladewater, and the schools were awful when I was there! But that was over 4 years ago, so they may have gotten better since. Good luck on your move!!

I live just outside of a very small town---Beckville. The school is small and a lot of people get their kids out of some of the slightly larger schools because the classes are small. Predominately white. My next door neighbor Is the intervention teacher at the elementary school. We are right at the edge of a coal mine--strip mine. Since the mining company has bought up a large amount of the land, I do not know what is for sale. It is Panola County. Try Coldwell Banker in Carthage. I never take the keys out of my trucks and we just don't have crime in our neat little community. About every 10 years we have something strange happen but usually just something weird.

Check out Hooks (between New Boston and Texarkana) and look at Gatesville, north of Killen.  Lampases, west of New Boston.

Go visit different places. You can tell a lot about a town by spending a weekend! What are restaurants and hotels like? The people who work in these places also live in the community (usually).
I live in sulphur springs. Its just an ok place to live. Its on I-30 so its easy to get to Dallas or Texarkana easily. . Emory is also near me and has better schools. Go online and check out potential school's ratings by TEA.
Methamphetamine use is rampant in east Texas. Which causes some of the negative community issues such as high crime rates. Check crime statics with a grain of salt usually these numbers are not accurately reported. I have learned you can tell more by the quality of people working at restaurants and retail.
Also check out the events calendar on this site if you plan on competing. Some places have a couple of arenas that stay really busy and allow you to compete several days each week while other places have nothing horse related.
You might consider leasing so that you have the option to move if you do not like the town or schools.
Good luck on your move. East Texas has some great places you will just have to seek what best fits your lifestyle.

I agree, the quality of people working fast food and retail gives you an excellent feel about what kind of place it is.

I do not know how far East this is but look into Farmersville.  My SO' parents own a house and a couple of farms there.  We stayed there for about a month or so and I liked the little town.

I teach in the Marshall school district. I work about 4 miles from Joseys--lucky me. I can bring my horse to school then head to the Reunion after school!!! I actually live in Beckville and really don't recommend Marshall schools. There are several good small schools around Marshall that have good schools. Hallsville, Elysian Fields, Beckville. Longview High is not ghood but there are two other school districts--Pine Tree and Spring Hill.
