I tried to buy a saddle through paypal. It charged the seller $53 in fees. Is there any way to get around that?

I think if you mark that the money is a gift and not an actual purchase - but not sure that you have any protection as a buyer that way?

Yep you need to send the money as a "gift" but as stated above you lose your protection as a buyer. When I sell something I do always ask that they send it as a gift but if they would rather not then that is fine. I just let them know i would rather not pay the fee if at all possible. Sometimes sellers will add the paypal fee onto the item.

I divided this out and that's the %, 2.9. OK, I've talked to the seller enough I feel pretty safe, it's just that we live so far apart it's hard to wait wait for a check to get there, then wait wait for the saddle to come back. I was just wondering if there was another way.

Wiring $ has a fee too.... but none of it is as much as the fuel to meet lol.

I've sold a couple saddles and included the fee. I've also absorbed the fee on a few things. To me its not a deal breaker and I think much safer, even though it sucks, than sending a check and hoping they send the saddle.

I just bought another saddle today, got a money order from the bank and going to send it by certified mail tomorrow, going to wait a few extra days for my saddle but thats ok, I talked with the seller in person over the phone about it and this was the best way for the both of us.

Just keep in mind that you are afforded NO protection if you "gift" the seller the money.  I, personally, would NOT gift it. When a seller sells on Ebay, they KNOW that they are going to be charged a fee so they should either add it or absorb it! It is not your (as a buyer) problem!

I used to sell some stuff on Ebay - there was no fee charged to me until I started accepting credit cards (if I remember correctly) - of course, there was a time delay for transfers from a bank, check, etc to clear paypal but there was something about fees with credit cards ????

The seller is supposed to absorb the fees, the buyer is not supposed to be taxed with them, just like the grocery store does when you use your visa.

It's a business so it sure doesn't bother me. Credit Card companies charge a fee so why do people think they should absorb the fee?

They don't charge a fee if the money is transferred right from your checking account.

Don't ever gift to someone you don't know.

I agree with this. I always absorb the paypal fee when I'm selling something and I expect the seller to absorb the paypal fee when I buy something if they accept paypal. I would never do the gift option.

You can send a check to the person via Priority Mail for about $5.60. It will be there in 2-3 days. Just an option to avoid the fees.

If you send it as a debit from your checking or savings account rather than through a debit card or credit card there should be no fees unless the seller has a merchant account with Paypal. The fees come in when the cards have to be processed.
