First off this post has nothing to do with horses but I did have a check stolen out of the mail.

Long story short I got on my online banking to pay my mortgage and it went down! YAY but weird? I was reading my statement to see why it decreased and found I was issued a refund for excess escrow fees and my mortgage had been adjusted to keep from over paying. I called the bank to find out when and how the refund would be issued. I was told a check was cut on the 9th of January. I told the lady my husband nor I had received a check. She checked with the escrow department and the check had indeed been processed. I was transferred to the fraud department and the guy told me they would have to send me a copy of the check to verify if it is or is not my signature.

So I filed the fraud claim with my bank and they said they would handle it but I am wondering if I still need to file a police report immediately or wait until I have a copy of the check?

Around the same time I also had a bank card that never made it. I wonder if the thief got that too?

I would file a police report, not just for you then for the next potential victim.

Since you did not receive the check (or the bank card), I would file a police report immediately and also file a report with the USPS. I do find it a bit strange that the bank is sending you a copy for YOU to verify your signature. Surely THEY have a signature card on file?????

I thought that was weird too. But maybe because I opened my account when I was 13 they figure my signatures wont match anyway?

My question is, where did they cash this check at? Wouldnt they need ID? Myself as a teller if im not familar with you I check ID. Unless they altered the check in some way and falsified information and went to there own branch. But still once it was processed thgrough the federal reserve and hit the bank of the person that wrote the check and they go to balance, and or the bank processes it, it should have been caught there as well..

Deffinalty file a report with the police, they will be able to investigate further, hopefully get camera footage of the theif.

You can probably file a report now but I'm for sure they are going to want a copy of that check before much is done.  A good part of any case on a matter like this is you being able to verify that you or your husband are not the ones who either signed or deposited this check elsewhere.  Until they know where the check was processed (i.e., which bank) they can't even start to pull possible survelliance tapes on who might have cashed it.  I would be trying to get my hands on a copy of that check ASAP from my bank.  I would see if they could give it to you if you went down there or possibly fax/email it instead of sending it through the mail.

It's very easy for thieves to get fraudulent ID.
I'd report it now. You can always bring the check later to detectives, and any other info you gather.

Yikes! A few years ago we ordered a full book of checks from our bank. We kept waiting and waiting and calling the bank. When hubby finally got mad and went to the bank these fools had mailed a full book of checks to an address in another state! What if they had been mailed to a thief! The bank fixed it but it shows they do make stupid mistakes!

That is what I thought as well, wouldn't they have to have an ID? My husband said you can cash checks at any business that is willing to take the chance.

I did call the sheriff's department. The investigator said that my check is not the only one in the area that has been fraudulently cashed. There have been several reports of missing and tampered with mail and checks being cashed up and down our valley. One of the communities that has reports is almost 50 miles from the nearest bank! The investigator said everything from bank cards to prescriptions to packages have been reported missing but they did take one suspect into custody. This does not account for the person who is accepting and cashing the checks for them but it is a start.

The investigator wants me to wait until I have a copy of the check so they can evidence and not just a he said/she said report.

They don't want to do a report until the check is in hand which I fully understand. At this point it's just me swearing I never got a check. I'm sure they hear that all the time. Luckily I have worked pretty closely with the investigator on several occasions so he knows I am not a liar or a thief.

I asked the bank's fraud department if they could send me an electronic copy to speed up the process. The guy in the fraud department said they can't because it was issued by the escrow department, they have to request the check from them, escrow has to mail it to the fraud department and the fraud department has to mail it to me. I asked "Even after the fraud department gets it you can't send it electronically?", "Nope sorry, we have to handle everything through the mail."

Good grief!

I would tell them to CALL you and that you will personally pick it up at the bank....if someone is stealing mail....duh....what is going to keep them from snagging a letter from the bank!

My husband is picking up a locking box and installing it tonight so unless they rip off the whole box there shouldn't be an issue with mail being stolen any more... I hope.

I wonder if you should check and make sure they didn't get any credit cards in your name.
