Martin does it for free and lets you test ride a saddle for 2 weeks also. Great people to work with!

Have you ever have Theresa Roster do a saddle fit for you?  She did it for me once.  She used wire and then made a paper template of the fit for this particular horse.  I want to say I was charged $85.

You can use the wire, tape it in a box and send it to Shiloh saddlery and they will recommend a tree for you … of course you have to wait forever for your saddle.

I just ordered one from Joseys this week but I am going to take my horse Monday to double check which bars to get. Free fit assessment. I about 30 miles from them and work right down the road so easy to get the horse there.

Most saddle makers will do it for free.  Just remember that their motive is to sell you a saddle..... (not saying that some of them don't do a great job), just keep in mind their end goal.

Here is some templates that you can create and do it yourself. It may be good just to do as a learning experience before you have an expert do it.

I'm not sure Wimpy.  She lives here in SD not far from the lady I asked about so wondered if she'd used her or was looking for someone different.

I'm glad to answer her, just not sure what she wants!! Thanks. Maybe she will
see this tomorrow and let us know.

I work independently on my own. I owned a tack store for 20 yrs. and yes, I do have my own saddle but it doesn't fit everything. My job is to help you to check your current saddle to see if it is or isn't working and even help you find something if I can. I work on many horses in different disciplines so I have no problem charging for my services. I work this as my job - not just selling saddles. If that bothers you anyone, I'm sorry but I prefer to eat, too! It's taken me years of learning and traveling, writing many articles on fit for magazines, spoken at many expos, travel to do clincis and don't feel ashamed at all to charge. There ya go...

A well respected saddle fitter like yourself should charge.  I'd have no problem paying you because I know the blood sweat and tears you have in your work.  I love it that you realize that one saddle doesn't fit everyone.  I've been burned a few times by saddle sellers/fitters.  I wish you were closer to me.

Thanks for everyone's input.  I have not used Teresa Roster, though have heard nothing but good things about her. My question arose from a conversation I had with a company that sell pressure mapping equipment.  I'm a PT and was in the middle of a wheelchair assessment using a pressure map.  I asked the rep what one of the systems would cost to assess saddle fit.  He told me that they had a nice wireless system that was designed just for that purpose...for $17,000.  I about died.  I was just trying to figure how long it would take to pay something like that off.  LOL

Thanks again!

Depends on what you charge! At $1000 per horse, not long. That said you probably aren't going to get that! lol My best guess is A LONG TIME. I USUALLY charge $75 per horse, but depends on if you bring it to me or I go to you and how far.

Hey Penny.  I had Theresa do a mare while at the Heartland a couple years ago.  I want to say she charged me $85 give or take.  That sounds like a really cool little gadget but yeah I'd have fallen over.

I think $85 is very reasonable for a fit assessment, especially considering Teresa is a vet.  I need to get ahold of her sometime.  I've got a couple tough-to-fit horses I'd like her opinion on.
