Location: Wisconsin | Besides putting a sheet on all summer, just wondering what you people do or feed that have jet black horses to keep them from fading to a brown? What about the main and tail as well? |

Location: East Tennessee but who knows?! | Flax seed and good nutrition & worming program, and keeping them up during the day. I think genetics plays into it too. |

| My heading horse is a grulla, he is such a pretty silver under his mane but the rest of him fades out. I thought about getting a uv sun screen sheet for this summer but it seems like even if they aren't in the sun they fade where they sweat. |

| Paprika! It really does work. I give mine flaxseed and a tablespoon of paprika in his grain every night. You want to get on it before they finish shedding. |

Location: Probably On the Road to the Next Barrel Race! | You can buy a powdered feed supplement called "Black as Knight". I got cheap and don't feed it anymore, I think its about $30/month. But I promise you, it works. I ckecked, the main ingredient is, I think, paprika. as far as manes and tails bleaching out on the ends, about twice a year I dye her mane n tail tips with Revlon Black hair dye. Yup! |

Never heard of using Paprika too funny, but how much each day do you feed? |

| I feed 1/2 cup of flax and 1 tablespoon of paprika. I start paprika the beginning of February when they start shedding. And the paprika works for all colors! My palomino was dark gold when I had him on it.
Also you want to rinse sweat off as much as possible. I have a UV sheet, but he would sweat underneath it which in turn would cause him to bleach in the areas he sweat.
This is summer of 2012, I didn't use paprika or flax.
Here is last summer with both flax and paprika.

| I had a black mare had brown in her ears. But keeping her,out of the sun. Also washing the sweat off even if you dont ride. My mare still got a little mousey by august. Also ypu can keep them body clipped. Light grey and white horses can do,the same thing. Also a little hair, color.

Location: Alberta | I agree with Fairweather, that genetics do play a roll....a true black horse stays black no matter what. I had a black mare who never dulled in summer, I didn't give her any special feed or keep her out of the sun, she would shine up blacker as the summer went on. |

| Haven't tried the paprika but I do feed black oil sunflower seeds and mine stays shiny black! Added bonus it seems to help with flies too so my dun and sorrel are getting them too! I have like a third of the flies that I see at other barns where I go to work |

| I second the paprika! I feed it to my dark bay gelding, and not only does our darken him it makes his dapples pop! |
