 Am I really the Weirdo?
Location: Kansas | Without Chance in the lineup, I turned to Clifford for the first rodeo of 2014 and he did a lot of things right. If I had waited one more stride to drop my outside rein and set up to turn the first, we would have been placing after the perf. Best of all, I found a way to keep him from freaking out in the warmup pen and being completely out of control going down the alley. Hopefully I won't have to have Streak be his calming influence forever, but I'm ok with having a buddy to sit and talk while we wait to run - heck it might keep me calm too!

The second barrel scares me to death on him. lol. He abuses me physically at the 2nd every run. I have a lot of trouble driving him all the way to his spot (which really should be a step deeper than this run) and then sitting down for his turn.
Thank you. He is really trying to work and I'm excited to run him in some big outdoor pens this summer. |

He was off somewhere the last time I ran him and crossfired leaving his 2nd & 3rd barrels so I went to the vet on Thursday, only to be told that his front feet were sore for like the 759th time. Vet couldn't find anything in hind end and blocks of the right front foot and ankle didn't narrow down where the pain is. I think Chance just can't handle walking or trotting on gravel. When I came home last night, he greeted me by sprinting to the gate and chasing all the other horses around the pen at a dead run for 10 minutes so I don't know if he is actually sore or not. But either way, I wasn't going to run him not knowing for sure that he's OK, and Clifford likes Lone Wolf. The ground there has been iffy in the past but Cliff always works well there so I was on the fence about running him even before Chance's stuff went down. I really think Cliff is going to be my crap ground horse because nothing fazes him and then I can save Chance for the 16-17 second pens with good ground that he likes. It might be really fun to rodeo hard without putting 80 runs on one horse this summer. |

Location: Kansas | I am so very very proud of him for the improvements he has made this year. I know there were many people who thought he'd never come around or that he was going to be a blown up nutcase in the near future, and actually the awful comments about Clifford prompted me to leave one of the barrel racer Facebook groups last year. Through all the crashed barrels, awful runs and entry fees down the drain, I think there was only one time that I really thought about giving up and selling him. Then I watched the video and saw my body language change, causing him to hit the second barrel. He has taught me a lot about slowing down to be fast and I'm sure he will continue to teach me more cool stuff throughout his career. Pretty soon my parents are going to have to admit that he's the most talented barrel horse I've ever had. Right now they are skeptical and think I should have either run Chance Saturday or vet released. |

Location: In a happy place | That is so hard to not be able to put a reason on why Chance is off. As far as Clifford goes....I like him, for whatever that is worth. Just remember how many other horses that were almost passed over that became famous barrel horses. I doubt if there are really any people that can really tell what a horse is going to be able to do. Just hang in there you and only you know what works for you and always remember that. It is a good lesson to learn. |

Have you considered checking for soft tissue injuries? When my horse tore his suspsensory, he would not block all the way out. Also could be ligaments IN the hoof that really can't be seen but with an MRI. Just a different direction since looking for bone pains isn't really getting you results. |

Yep, it is driving me nuts. Some days Chance lopes perfect 10 foot circles, holding his leads and other days he is like an uncoordinated bucking horse when I ask for the same thing. I think I'm about to become neurotic about tracking every single thing that I do/don't do from day to day until I can pinpoint what I'm doing on the days he works vs. the days he doesn't. Then maybe we can get to the bottom of things with him. Matt wants me to take Chance to his vet for a second opinion, and I'm considering it just to get another set of eyes on him in hopes that there is an AHA! moment coming soon.
As for Cliff, I have just kept telling myself that only one person has to really believe in him and that person is me. That said, it is very frustrating that even my closest friends and family never say anything nice about him. It took several years for my parents to get "on board" with Chance so I'm hoping that a couple nice rodeo checks will change their minds about Clifford too, or at least get them to shut up when I say I'm running him instead of Chance! |

Someone yesterday suggested that he could just be muscle sore, but no one has really mentioned ligaments. I'm thinking about getting him a massage/bodywork treatment because he is pretty touchy-feely and really seemed to like his last massage. I may have to learn to do that too cause Cliff is also the same way. I have three of the cuddliest horses around and then my Joker is like "just leave me alone in the pasture until its time to run, then let me work and turn me back loose." He does not appreciate being coddled or having barrel racer feel good stuff on him. LOL. |

Not saying he isn't muscle sore, but just being sore from working is not going to make his feet be that sore.. something is for sure going on there, I would start to look at soft tissue. Have you injected the coffin joints to see if he get some relief that way? That might be a suggestion too. |

What gets me is that even with his shoe off, he was barely lame on grass but HORRIBLY lame on the gravel where my vet likes to do his lameness exams. I realize you find if anything is not 110% by moving them on gravel, but I NEVER expose Chance to gravel without his Soft Rides on, so being lame on gravel doesn't mean much to me. Heck I would be lame on it too without good boots! Coffin joint injections were mentioned as a possibility down the road. I think maybe I should bump the original thread about Chance so I don't have to retype the whole background and can just add stuff from Thursday to now. |
