This is good to know. I recently bought this bit and was surprised that my boy would kind of throw his head up around the barrel. I really wanted this bit for him to run in to free him up. We will have to give it another try with bit guards.

Yes, we use bit guards with any bit that slides. I use Running Roan leather bit guards.

Any bit I have that has a little bit of gag slide gets bit guards put on. Always.
Bit guards are cheap insurance to keep my horse's mouths from getting accidentally pinched.
