I used to start my own but decided to send them out a few years ago, best decision I ever made. As a general rule I think you get what you pay for. Having settled for some "cheaper" trainers in the past then finding the guy I have start mine now is like comparing apples to oranges. Those first rides are SO important for the future of your horse you want every one of them to be productive and positive.
I am NOT in a hurry with my colts but my colt starter can get more done in 10 rides than the other guy could in 30. I have a calm, responsive, confident colt that I can go on with. My horsemanship has improved immensely since working with him. It's been a win-win situation all the way around.

I'll go to bat for Phil any day! He and his family are awesome people, on top of amazing horsemen. As a previous poster put it, generally with any training whether it be a cutting trainer, race trainer, barrel horse trainer, you generally get what you pay for. Just remember, trust your gut and if it's too good to be true, it probably is.

I bought one started by Phil Haugen. He did an great job with him, I was impressed. I sent one to Rance Butler last year because I liked the feel he has for a horse--he looked like a good fit for me to ride behind. I was very very happy with my filly when she came home and am sending him another one as soon as he has room.
