~~This is the gelding I posted on a few weeks ago about not sure how long to give him to see progress.. I am happy to say he has picked up the pace some and was actually in  second in the 2D  last run improving his time by 4 tenths..
I'm having trouble getting speed out of him for one, which you will see in the video he just kind of floats thru. In the second video he is picking up the pace a lot from the first video but our second barrel is just falling apart.. The videos are a year apart, last year his second was nice and pretty, now hes getting "stuck" about 3/4 of the way around the second.. (don't mind the first barrel in the second video he actually usually has a pretty nice first most of the time, he was just not rating for me the day this video was takin and its all I have to show right now)  So any help, suggestions, anything would be greatly appreciated I have watched it over and over and I'm just not seeing what and where I need to fix..

First video taken a year ago.. Nice second not much speed

Second video taken last week. bad second little more speed

He dropped his hind lead going around the second.  If he is doing this and running and not wanting to rate down at the first, the first thing I would think is he is sore.  Take him for a good lameness exam and see what that tells you.

I seem the crossfire around second too, I would get a vet check done.

The other thing, why are you not running him out of the building, you are not riding home aggressive, I would try giving him a love tap to tell him to speed up, and I would drive him right out of the building.

Also as you already said his first was not nice, he lost time and momentum around this turn. You need to put your horse in the right place, don't expect him to put you there. With more run, you need more rate, sometimes I have to start rating half a stride sooner if they come barreling in.

You also need to ride aggressive, when you sit, you need to keep driving with your hips and legs. I also use vocal encouragement.

Thanks he usually rates the first very nice, that day he had been locked up in the stall for 2 days because of weather and he was just being pushy in and out of the arena, feeling a little to good.. I will get him looked at but he does not feel sore.

This was just a practice work we videod I had already worked him that day and running out of the arena the ground was hard from the rain, thats why I let him coast home and didn't run out the gate. When I have a clock or money on the line I do hussle him much more but even then I am not an aggressive rider.

I would have a soundness exam done. also, you are a quiet rider - work on moving your feet more Between the barrels. going to the 3rd you put a pretty good S curve in there. Straighten that out by looking ahead to the next spot you want him to go to. Also when you sit back he slows Way down so keep kicking all the way across the line.  I bet he is sore in hocks or stiffles.

Lots of pilot errors ...

Barrel rein is too short and you are tilting his nose out going around the barrels and throwing his rear out into a one rein stop and 3/4's into the turn you are pulling back sending mixed stop signals causing him to think stop or stutter step .. ...

Letting him get off pattern going to 3rd and his correction move speaks well for the horse ... he is covering a lot of ground very well ...

all the pilot needs to do is get focused and ride like a crazy woman on crack... lol ..... this is a nice moving easy to ride horse!! .... ..

IMO he's doing the exact same thing that a new one I just got is doing, and we've been working on correcting it, but it's going to take awhile. He's not changing his lead where he should be (which is a stride out of the 1st IMO) and so when he gets to the second, in order to not fall down, he swaps in front to make the turn, but then his back end gets hung up because he didn't swap in back. This also will cause them to start hitting the 2nd, because as they change leads right there, they also will sometimes dive. IMO, you first need to have him checked and make sure he's not sore in his stifles or hocks, then start working on him changing his lead a stride or 2 before he gets to the 2nd and I bet you'll have a nice turn. Another thing you can do is to trot to the barrel, then at their rate point, ask for a lope and lope around it. This teaches them to engage that hind leg and keep moving around the barrel. The 2nd is the hardest barrel in the pattern because it's the sharpest turn, and they also have to change leads before they get there. A trick I learned from Connie Combs for one that doesn't want to switch at the right place is to put a 4X4 piece of wood between the 1st and 2nd and as they jump over it, they'll usually swap leads. After you do it a few times, you can remove the wood, and they'll still swap there.

Agree with the others that a lameness check is in order to see why he is cross-firing in the 2nd barrel turn.

Commenting on the most recent video only:

I can't really tell what is going on with the 1st barrel as it is a little fuzzy. He's somehow getting some "hang time" behind the barrel that's holding him up. He actually swings his butt  and does not drive through the turn with his butt engaged. (might have to do with lameness on that one too)

For the second barrel, you asked him to turn WAY too soon.

And where are you looking? The video is fuzzy but it looks like you are looking AT the barrel. You should be looking where you are going; not looking at the barrel.

For the 3rd barrel, again, make sure you look where you are going. You didn't aim him properly when you left the 2nd barrel. You had to waste time to move him over, which pulled his nose to the outside, before being able to make the turn.

And overall, hustle him more with your body in-between the barrels. You do ride nice and quiet, but go ahead and ask him to move.

Thank You for all the responses.. I do not think he is sore but I'll get him checked it never hurts to be sure. However he has no pain points and is 100% on a flex test, although he could be a little muscle sore just from getting in shape cause I sure know I am... I rode him in a smooth snaffle and running martingale today and really made him collect up.. HUGE DIFFRENCE!! HUGE!! I did trot him to the barrel and then asked him to collect and lope around it and he really got up under himself and worked nice!! VERY NICE! As long as he was collected he came out and got on the right lead front and hind which also made a big diffrence when I let him lope through one.   Only problem with this is he is way to much horse and WAY to powerful for me to ride two handed around a barrel to keep him in collection at any faster pace.
