I have a mare that came up with a tendon injury after I had only owned her for 3 months last year. I have been in the process of rehabbing her and will be able to get her back in full training starting in June. She has become hard for me to ride (spooking and taking off with me once). I don't know if I can blame her since she's been stalled and has had to be worked very slowly due to the injury. But after she ran off with me I couldn't bring myself to ride her and have been having the trainer take over the rest of the rehab. I have since found a horse that I LOVE. I get along with him great! I did get along with my mare before she got hurt, but she was still spooky, but at a show was all business. I don't know if I should sell her or not once I get her legged up and ready to go this summer, partly due to the fact that I will probably always worry about that tendon and another due to the fact that she ran off with me. What would you do? Thanks!

If you can't trust her it's not worth keeping her. I have a mare who had a tendon injury last Spring but recovered very well and shouldn't re-injure herself as long as I take necessary precautions - get her fit before working the pattern, keep her feet balanced, polo wrap when running, etc. Talk to your vet about the tendon concerns and what he/she thinks as far as sustainability for performance. Even if she stays sound for running, if you can't trust her , it's not worth keeping her.

I would also sell. She is going to be much more prone to reinjury. Unfortunately you will need to disclose her injury while selling and her price will have to reflect it. Even though she's now sound.

But if I had already moved on to another horse that I was getting along with just as well or better, I wouldn't keep one that I had to worry about her tendon.

It doesn't sound like she fits you. You'll both be happier if you find her a home she does fit.
