The part scaring me is that I know people around here who are continuing to haul. As I keep saying, it's not "your horse" I worry about. It's the horses yours encounter that may be sick and then bring it back to a given area.

I agree. I am extremely frustrated with it. So many people complaining about things being cancelled, postponed, etc but if I never compete again but I know my horse is healthy, ill be much happier than if I risk it and my horse ultimately catches this crap!

Β the reality is that the risk right now is still very low......

I do keep in perspective that 9 horses out of how many in Minnesota have tested positive but I also know that some of those 9 have really been traveling and have exposed a lot of horses.

The risk isnt low enough for me to feel comfortable to haul. I think we can all survive staying home for awhile.

I think the fact that no other horses in the barns of the sick ones have come down with it (unless the vets aren't reporting that).

Seems to be far less virulent than originally thought.

I had a friend with a horse in training at Findlay's western facility when this happened at their English barn back in 2003. http://www.equisearch.com/horses_care/health/illnesses_injuries/her...

We haven't seen this take out entire facilities like that, no where close.

A week now without a new case. I think it's calming down.

That's how it was last time was a week no new cases and then 3 popped up.

Also, I'm not willing to risk my horses health for a few bucks and me enjoying myself. I'll stay home all season if I need to. It's not worth it. I just wish others would keep there butts home for a few weeks.

OhMax - 2014-03-28 9:27 AM Abraham's Equine Clinic Hello, everyone I want to take a moment to let you know that the horse that tested positive for EHV-1 is a resident of Crystal Creek Stable in Marion. This anim...al was shipped to a farm in Minnesota where it spent one day, then returned directly back home. This horse did not stop at any facilities in Iowa on the way back to the stable. Again, this horse made no stops in Iowa between Minnesota and it's resident stable. Therefore no other horses in our area were directly exposed to this animal except for the horses at this barn. We have requested that there be no horses transported in or out of this facility for at least two weeks . Any questions please contact us at 319-366-6441. ~ Charles Abraham, DVM From the other ehv thread. This horse was in MN and exposed there. It would appear that exposure once it returned home was limited. Let's keep in mind that we are talking about 9 horses. Not 90. Outbreak, not epidemic. Deep breathes. Work with your vet. We are immune boosting, going to start on lysine. Taking dysinfectant for our stalls at bonus race and generally being alert and cautious. I don't advise throwing caution to the wind here, but I'm not sure hiding under the rock is needed either (exceptions being barns that house horses with compromised immune systems to begin with, the very old, the very young, or the recently ill). I like to think we're standing on the rock, looking around, gathering all information and listening to our professional vets. I'm not a vet, nor have I ever played one on the big screen, these opinions are my own and have been formulated through conversation and consideration with my vet, hauling partner/barn owner and others in the community.

What do you reccomend as a disinfectant for stalls at the bonus race? Will a bleach mixture work?

My vet (who is one of the two on-site vets at the BRF) told me that bleach isn't a good disinfectant because once it touches something organic it becomes null. I'm taking something called Tek-Trol, which is a disinfectant that we used to sell to the baby pig barns around here. It's good stuff--anti bacterial, anti fungal, virucide, etc. I actually have 6 gallons of concentrate that have been sitting upstairs for several years because the pig barns changed products. I should bring it and sell it...

Saw the suspected case...at least it's not somewhere new. Sad way to look at it, but it's something.

I've seen a product called Nolvasan recommended for disinfectant in several places. TSC carries a small bottle so I'm going to swing by and pick some up and take a garden sprayer to spray down my stall.

Please consider that just because its not in the news that there is more to this. There is a reason vets are posting public statements of frustration (they likely know more than we do). I know of several cases pending that have shown symptoms in the last couple of days and have tests pending but apparently those are not being reported.

Can anyone else confirm this?

I heard it was at a stable located in Ft. Collins.

I saw this last week, but it was determined that the Ft Collins case was from 2011 or 2012, can't remember. But it was NOT from the current outbreak from what I've understood, and everything I can find thus far concurs with that.
