| Does anyone else have a problem with birds building nests in your lean to/barn? The past couple years it seems the birds have gotten out of control. They build nests right over the top of where the water tank is and in turn the tank gets bird poo and nest stuff in it constantly. What is the best way to get rid of them? We filled many of the gaps with foam insulation to try and make them leave and they are now ripping that apart....I know we can shoot them but there are so many this could be quite the process so another option would be better.... |

| Tear the current nests out. Then go to Walmart or the Dollar Store and buy several aluminium pie plates. Poke a hole by the edge and hang them from the ceiling of your barn with fishing line so that they swing and spin when the wind blows. The birds will stop building nests as long as they are hanging in there. |

| For a permanent fix ... get you a roll of the smallest sized chicken wire or the square rabbit hutch wire and cut it in strips and staple it on each side of the rafters or whatever they are building nests and roosting on to prevent them from getting into those areas .. make sure wire is small enough to keep out sparrows ....
MOVE YOUR WATER TANKS AND ANY FEEDERS NOW AND USE BLEACH TO CLEAN THEM UP ...
Birds carry coccidiosis and it causes this.... Means horse will be off feed and water, have the squirts, lethargic and lose condition very quickly and could bleed to death due to destruction of the mucous lining of his stomach and colons... and liver damage...
Scientific explanation ...>>>>>>>> lol >>>>>>
Coccidiosis is a usually acute invasion and destruction of intestinal mucosa by protozoa of the genera Eimeria or Isospora. Clinical signs include diarrhea, fever, inappetence, weight loss, emaciation, and in extreme cases, death.
The worst thing anyone can insulate a barn or indoor arena walls or ceiling with is the insulation that is supported by chicken wire. Birds and rats love this stuff!!
GOOD LUCK!!

Fake owls and fake snakes don't work, trust me.
Wire that prevents the birds from using the beams as perches is the only real way to keep them from roosting or nesting in the barn. |

Location: Oklahoma | My grandpa used to put up plastic sacks and the fluttering of the sacks helped out... but if your nests aren't in an area with a lot of windflow I don't think that would work. |

Location: where ever my L/Q trl is parked | I have a owl outside it sits on a tpost. It kept the barn swallows from building their mud nest, but not the sparrows. I have to take the owl down and put away every winter or the birds realize that it's a fake. I've tried snakes, the silver strips that twist and make sounds and even the filament red/silver strips none of that worked. The chicken wire really is the best deal. I read that hanging heavy fishing filament will work too. |

I dont have a bird problem so never had to deal with it, the fake owl was just an ideal, I see lots of them in barns, maybe they need to be moved around every once in a while, just an ideal sorry if it was a bad one, gosh |

Don't feel bad..maybe fake owls will work next time. Or maybe we can coax a real owl to take up residence!
Did have a hawk move in for a while, but he was a messy eater. Left rements of birds for us to clean up! Yak!! |

I have real owls so never had a problem with the birds. So thought maybe the fake ones would do. |

| Had a problem with mud daubbers under our front entry way to our house, tried fake owls, pie plates etc etc to big an area to use chicken wire and not attractive . Found some stuff called Bird Away at home depot came in a tube you use with a caulk gun. Worked great have never had to re-apply and that was three years ago. Fought the birds and bird poo for ten years and have recommended this to several. Everyone said it worked for them also. |

| Get a barn cat! Or go grab some teenaged boys with pellet guns. I bet either one would have that problem solved real quick! |

| I tried every trick in the book to get rid of pigeons...everything already mentioned above. I ended up with 1, then 2, then...well, now I have 5 stray/feral barn cats. No birds, no pigeons, no rats or mice. It doesn't take 5 to get the job done either, 1 will do. I had cats in the past but when they got old and died then pigeons took over. Problem: Birds -- Solution: Cat(s) It's the easiest and most foolproof way to get rid of birds! |
