I'm just curious...but how would you go about getting horses off the track? I see tons of OTTBs that are up for adoption at numerous shelters and rescues for really cheap. It's like people think they aren't worth anything. How do these shelters get them and is it possible for anyone to get them? I'm not really looking for one right now but maybe in the future ;) Most of the horses I see are Thoroughbreds...are there as many quarter horses that need new homes off of the track also? Thanks!!

A lot of picked up at sales but also if you get in contact with a vet that works on the track, they can usually hook you up.

QH's retain a LOT more value coming off the track than a TB

I see a ton of TB's on horseclicks, CL, etc for cheap.

Heritage place has sales throughout the year. Then BHW has ads a lot, racehorse place, Facebook, word of mouth. Kuhlmann always finds something for me, LOL!

I have a friend who works at Los Al as an exerciser and she helps rehome/sell the horses when they're done. TBs are usually free (most need some time off due to injury) or sell for half of what a Quarter brings. Alot of the TBs are taken to auction when they're done. There's usually 10 TBs looking for homes to every 1 Quarter.

I've always been curious how claiming race work. It seems like those horses tend to be good prospects.

Why are the TBs valued lesser?  Are they not a durable as the QHs, or do all track horses need time off after racing?

I would bet its because there are so many more of them and the market is overly saturated. Most people don't use TBs for barrel horses; they use QHs. And even people who jump or do English have more than enough to pick from. More of an open market on barrel horses with a bit less saturation.

Honestly, you have to develop a contact or an "in." I've been trying to do this myself for a good three years without success. The OTT quarter horses are there but by the time they are advertised, their price has increased exponentially. Grooms, jockies, trainers, vets, all racetrack personnel have friends that are looking for cheap or free quarter horses.  That's where they go. By the time you or I find out about them, they are priced just the same as any other horse. I talked to a female jockey this weekend who gets a free TB or two for jumping and free QH to resell every season. of course, some of them end up on a kill truck. I know a guy that says he makes a trip a week to the track during TB race season to pick up kill horses.

Claiming horses is defiantly where you want to do your homework and have an 'in' at the track. There's not much pre-viewing of the horses before a claiming race, you buy the horse before the race starts, so once the race is over you walk away with whatever you walk away with, possibly a crippled, hopefully something sound, and if the horse breaks down during that race, it is still yours to pay for after. You also have to pay taxes on claimed horses, and I believe only a licensed trainer can claim the horse for you.
