History on the gelding. He's a reformed run away ally issued barrel hitter. Have been retraining the last year. Just started entering him this month. Also during this last month we changed bits to help stiffen up his barrels. ( along with some different exercises)! He was going in a jr cow horse with a twisted wire and ball mouth piece. Moved to a little S and has been working great. Couple days ago our brakes went out. Got him stopped schooled him etc. last night power steering and brakes went out when we made a run. Nothing would keep him off the barrels going anything over a lope. I know this bit has no whoa etc. what can I put him in? He seemed much happier in a hack but I need something to get his attention when he's flipping me the bird. Usually he's very light and has a heel horse stop. But as soon as he figured out he could run through the bit. That was all she wrote.

I like this hackmore. I use a loose curb to keep my horse bendy and a little further down the nose than most people. But I use it for competition ONLY. And use something on them that works for the lesson I'm trying to get across.

If he is chunking his head up when he runs off, I use a rope head setter . Rope that is over the poll and a sliding nose piece.
Also he could have ulcers.

Someone on here recommended t me that I put mine in a Stiver hack and it worked wonderfully for me.

Mine never took off or anything but as soon as he figured out just how light the little S was our pattern got a little sloppy and he would blow out the back side of the 2nd. The switch really helped keep us tight and clean but is still light enough that he enjoys running in it and didn't feel as binding as the Jim Werner felt to me.

My boy was my reining horse for many years before I switched him over to barrels so he is very light and responsive.

What about a good combination? L & W #156 combination, works off the nose with little mouth at the same time, or #327 which will first apply pressure to the nose, then the mouth, and then the curb. That would be something I would try, it gives him the chance to respond with just the nose like a hack but if he tries to bolt you can increase pressure until he comes back to you.

Assuming you have had him checked out and there are no ulcers, epm or anything in the body soreness areas....
I actually like a beetlenose hack as a step up from a little s....
I had a Warner and ran in it one time, and it broke... never bought another...scares me lol

After making sure there are no health issues, I'd get a Ronny Clampitt made hack. Talk to him about you and your horse and he will build you one. LOVE mine

I've used a Stiver hack on a horse like you describe if you want to stick with hacks.  If your open to other suggestions my vote is a Stabilizer bit with the long shank.

Lil S isn't known to have any whoa or much of one.
Warner's : had two with less than 5 rides on each and they broke. Not a good deal on either I had it on.
I went to a Wasson- great hack.
Million dollar will give you the lift you need to stop crashing.
The Clampitts are too heavy shanked and the chain is too tiny so I won't go that route.
Try and find a Wasson
