So i have a horse that has ulcers and have had him on strategy for over a year with great results.. BUT he is sick of it and he literally picks through it. He is not a big fan of pellets. Any other suggestions?

If the horse still has ulcers after a year, the feeding program wasn't working.

My horses who have active ulcers, I treat for 30 days with omeprazole, then I only give them omeprazole when they are showing signs.

When hauling I use papaya puréed.

I should rephrase that.. He had ulcers.. and we changed his feed before when he had them and he is an entire different horse now but he is just sick of the pellet feed.

One of the signs of ulcers is when they would rather eat hay than grain because it soothes their stomach more. So he may not dislike the grain but it just makes the ulcers worse. I would treat for ulcers and feed him alfalfa as well; it is best for ulcers and easily digestible. Also, make sure he always has access to hay or grass so that his stomach isn't empty. When they eat often, it helps reduce the acid in the stomach and prevents ulcers.

I concur fully with this post.

Also, you may try strategy healthy edge. It is a little more expensive but I'm really liking it. I have a SUPER picky eater with ulcers (I'm treating her now) and she eats it pretty well. It is also less starchy than the regular strategy so it will be gentler on their stomach.

If you ulcers, need to stay away from molasses and starch. Find a low starch high fat grain. Feed as much hay as you can, they need a on the low side pasture grass and hay 10 -12% of there body weight. Alfalfa of any kimd is wonderful. Standlee hay makes alfalfa pellets without molasses, good product, or,you can use cubes, or,if,you can get hay.

I have found that corn in feed upsets ulcers, so I have completely have taken it of my feed and replaced with oats, and I give a cup of aloe Vera juice with there feed once a day.
