I have long trotted him, but not on a regular basis. I will have to add that to our weekly routine

When I long trot - I long trot them almost 2-3 miles every day - long trot for a mile, walk 1 mile, long trot 1/2 mile, lope a little, long trot in circles, and I give a lot of variation but I long trot them a lot. It will also help build you leg muscles and core and make you a better rider.

To add to this ... correct collection will encourage them to push with their hind end and use their back muscles more. Correct collection is not just the animal giving to the bit in the face, but breaking at the poll, lifting the back, breaking/giving at the withers (sp?? sorry), and pushing from behind your hips into a soft "frame" - to quote some English riding people. This video explains it all really really well! :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8cOq7YWXys Anywho, that is GREAT way to build that top up! Good Luck!

This....  Correct collection is very very important.

Also THE Muscle Mass is great supplement for the top line in addition to riding.

I can definitely tell a difference in myself after riding more! My legs are much stronger than before and my back is stronger (I have had back issues in the past) and I feel great!! I have no Idea how long it is to go around our big pasture, but its probably 1/4 to 1/2 a mile...
