Location: Texas | I have a gelding by First To Shine out of Jessies Arrangement by Mr Jess Perry. I love this horse and he has tons of personality and very easy to be around. However, I am really having an issue with him turning before the 2nd barrel though and I can't figure it out! I have been contemplating selling him but listening to all of you maybe I should hold out a bit longer and get this issue resolved. He did high lope a nice pattern a couple weeks ago in our "home pen" and clocked the bottom of the 2D with some really tough horses. |

I'm not a barrel trainer, but if that is his only issue, I'm pretty sure there's an easy fix for that. Did you ask advise for on here? I'll bet someone has a solution. |

Yes, I agree. Fix the issue. Where FTS has passed away, they are going to become harder to get ahold of. I think the grandget are going to be hot little items in the arena. |

I have not asked for advice here. I have been asking my local friends but everyone is kind of stumped. I will see if I can post a video on here and see what folks think. Someone did mention the possibility of ulcers. Going to check that out too. |

But, just around the second barrel?? Hmmmm. I think we'll have some great suggestions. |

Location: NE Texas | First things first, you need to get a complete lameness exam done with an equine specialist. Secondly, get his teeth checked by an equine dentist. Once you are certain your horse isn't in any kind of pain, then find someone to help you tune on him. Did he first start hitting the second barrel going in to him? Typically that's how most second barrel issues start is with the anticipation of the turn oth on yours and his parts. He starts turning too early and you start getting the second barrel consistently, so then you start trying to hold him off of it. The more you try to hold him off, the more he drops to turn because you lose all your forward momentum and he's likely dumping on his front end. Pretty soon you have a horse that won't even go across the pen. Without seeing the video or knowing you or the horse, that is my bet. I could be wayyyyyyyy off, but I see this problem time and time again. I just had some people drive in weekend before last with this exact problem to get some help. It's a vicious cycle we as riders get into in trying NOT to hit barrels. We develop bad habits, our horses develop bad habits, and bad goes to worse. Don't give up on him just yet. Chances are ya'll just have some bad habits you both need to over come!
Good luck with your gelding and i'd be happy to help you in any way I can! |

We have gone over this horse with a fine toothed comb and fixed many things. He is not a barrel hitter at all. I think he has hit one since we have started. I do believe his issue started from soreness but he feels AWESOME now and I know it is not a soreness. Ulcers are the only other thing I have not investigated. It seems to be the stress of the run. He can do this in a run and immediately go to a practice pen and lay down a beautiful run with no indication of trying to go to the wrong side. He will finish his first and be lined up perfectly for the 2nd and will all of a sudden try his hardest to get to the wrong side. Then the funny part, he doesn't try to go out the pen. No, he turns a beautiful circle and heads to the 3rd...just not around the barrel. I don't want to hijack this post but I will try to load a video so you can see what I am talking about. |

FIRST TO SHINE is always an added plus to your broodmares or babies.
Dashin Alabama is out of a daughter of FTS and crossed with my stallion has fantastic conformationed babies that are easy to train .....

With the indepth barrel bloodlines and speed from the Mr Jess Perry and FTS lines these babies should be dynamite barrel smokers ... all 3 of her foals are full brothers and I am breeding her back the same way .. they are that good!! COUGARS SLING SHOT ...
