I have had my barrel horse scoped by two vets and she is confirmed to be displacing when she runs by both. One vet suggest I do a Tie-Forward surgery, but it is a more invasive surgery with a longer recovery time then what the other vet suggested I do, a myectomy combinded with a tenectomy surgery on her (is this also called a "Llewellyn" surgery??) . I was told this surgery is very simple, not nearly as invasive as the tie forward surgery, and done standing up in the stall under sedation and back to being rode in about 2 weeks. But i am looking for anyone with PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with this surgery VS the tie forward surgery? And if it worked for them? If so how long did it work for? I am trying to avoid the tie forward surgery if this other surgery will work, since it is less invasive and has a shorter recovery time, but I do not want to do it, if I will just have to turn around and do the tie forward surgery on her anyway.
Yes she has ran in a tongue tie, but no i do not want to keep doing that everytime i work her or run her. She displaces when she is just loping a circle, so she would need her tongue tied every time to stay comfortable.
I have also found a WTP bit to try on her, but it is not here yet, and if it does not work on her (as she is very funny about what she runs in) I want to know what I am looking at if I have to do surgery on her.

We just did the least invasive surgery on one of ours about a month and a half ago. We were having to tie her tounge down but that started to not work for her. Her second run back she was 3rd in the 1d out of 200 horses this past weekend. Dr Symm at Texas Equine did ours. We chose to do that one first, and if it didnt work we were going to go back and do the tie forward. However its so far so good with her right now.

I have a 5 year old that displaces when flexed at the poll. I took him a couple weeks ago to get scoped with the "dynamic" scope that scopes a horse while you ride instead of on a treadmill which allowed us to simulate the poll flexion better. Well sadly it just showed some narrowing of his air way at the lope while bridled up so we couldnt get him to displace... The vet couldnt give me a 100% diagnosis.  The biggest reason we couldnt get him to displace while scoped was because the scope contraption had a cavason that was used to keep it in place from flopping around... Well even though his mouth was "held shut" with the cavason while being scoped... When he doesnt have a cavason on and is rode in a regular snaffle he has the classic signs of displacing... open mouth breathing, gaping his mouth, getting his tounge over the bit and putting it on the side of his mouth.... Plus exercise intollerance when he is bridled up.
I was researching DDSP and as my vet also stated that tounge ties are showing to be ineffective. Most people get better results with a figure 8 nose band or a tongue control bit, like the serena song bit or the WTP bit. Also there is the cornell collar that was designed by cornell university.  It has been proven to help stop or control DDSP with out surgery.
I am not having the surgery done yet until I see if the WTP bits help. I do have the serena song bit but, it only comes in an o-ring or egg butt. It has really helped him since I bought it in Feb. and rode him around in it when the weather was nice....  So I am excited to get the WTP bit at the end of the month....

My mare had the tie-forward procedure, it cured the exercise intolerance but not the bleeding, I thought (hoped) it would cure both, but it didn't.  Good luck!  :)
