Looking for a new hauling truck and found a good deal on a low mile (127,000) 2003 Ford F350 Supercab XLT 4x4 Diesel Pickup w/ 5 speed manual transmission with 6.0 liter V-8 diesel engine. Any thoughts or opinions on this truck? I know this body style has some hits and misses depending on year...

You found a smokin deal on a 6.0 because they are a piece of pure JUNK!! They are so bad it even resulted in a huge lawsuit with Ford. Run, run as fast as you can and dont look back.
We had one. Nothing but problems and it left us stranded every time we left town with it. It was broke down more then it ran and the repairs cost us thousands and thousands and alot of down time. I was never so happy to see a truck leave our driveway for good in all my life when that thing left. Oh, by the way. It left on a trailer.....in it's usual form.....not running.

If it comes with service records (EGT replacement, injectors, etc) you are fine. With 127k miles, it's either already been replaced or the truck never had a problem. I would buy another 6.0 in a heartbeat. We love ours.

Mid 2003 was when Ford introduced the 6.0 Powerstroke. They were so bad, Ford wound up buying a number of 6.0 Powerstroke equipped trucks back from customers.
And like Murphy says w/ around 130k mileage: This truck has A) either had problems or B) been incredibly lucky. For problems in the first production run 6.0 Powerstroke typically showed up between 80/90k. If they showed up.

Thanks guys. I've heard so many mixed things! A few people we know own them and 50% hate and 50% love! lol A close friend of my husbands is a diesel mechanic who builds pulling trucks and wants to go with us check it out. I do know it recently had the fuel pump changed and they added a Edge aftermarket booster... from what we can tell the owner couldn't make payments (divorce) and the truck was repo'd. They are only asking $8500oo (payoff) for it. No idea if we can get all the service paperwork on it... def going to go over it with a fine tooth comb before considering it.

So this one may be ok with the mileage? My husband is chomping at the bit to get his hands on this dang truck. I know his mechanic friend works on a lot of fords so hopefully he can talk some sense into him if he finds something fishy. Im really hoping we can get our hands on the service papers! I would just get a carfax but I know they miss a lot if not repaired at a dealership. I have been looking up reviews and sending them to him left and right, I told him if he sticks me with a lemon he will have walking around with my boot up his rear until he is 80! lol

Mine is an '04. I bought it new. Ran great up until about 100-110k miles. At that point, it fell apart and kept falling apart until about 140k miles. EGR Valve (3 of them), injectors twice, High Pressure Oil Pump, turbo, FICM, upgrades that were supposed to fix it all blah blah blah. I can't even remember everything my truck had done. But it was over $6k worth of repairs in a short time. It now has 165k on it and it's running strong. But, I keep my fingers crossed. Would I buy another one? Absolutely NOT!!

We have an 05 Ford with the 6.0 and it was a freakin POS when we bought it. Thankfully everything that could have went wrong did, in the first month of ownership, and we had purchased the warranty. We replaced the EGR Cooler, the Turbo,  the oil cooler, 7 of 8 fuel injectors, and a rear seal. We had over $16,000 in repairs and Ford didn't believe us. The flew in their "mechanic" who ran the tests for his very own so he could authorize the warranty work.

We bought it with 60,000 miles and it now has 106,000 and is running great..(knock on wood.) We will however, when the warranty runs out next year, sell it and move onto hopefull the 2012 or newer.

Thats all I need is another "project" truck in the driveway that needs worked on all the time. His diesel pulling buddy's are a really bad influences. On the other hand, if his only fault is picking out crappy trucks I guess I can live with it, he does fund my horse "projects" that seemed like a good idea at the time.

2003 and 2004 were the years the 6.0's had a ton of problems identified. The only way I'd consider it would be if this truck has had the head studs and egr delete done already (an expense of about $3,000 because to do it, they have to remove the cab of the truck from the frame).

I just talked to my nephew (he thinks he knows whose truck this was) and said the head gaskets had been changed a few years ago and the egr was already deleted. I'm wondering if they did the head studs when the head gasket was fixed? Is there any way to tell?

Yes, a truck person would be able to identify the studs. They can repair gaskets all they want, but if studs are not put in place, it can happen again. That was the problem with the 6.0's in 2003.
