Hmm. Well i wouldn't say he was fat, just healthy. A little extra fat won't hurt seeing as he is getting exercised often. So how much do you generally give? I've seen 1 cup, but I'm not sure.

Do you feed the shelled or unshelled? Does it matter? Very interested in this as well...

I would start out with about 1/2 cup. It doesn't take much. It makes their feet healthy too. Good stuff.

Have you had any trouble with them eating it?

I used to feed these and liked the result, but stopped because of a horse that I had with ulcers and started wondering if the shells irritated the lining of the stomach or intestines being a bit hard and sometimes sharp?

If you want more reviews- just google "feeding boss". Black Oil Sunflower Seeds. A lot of english riders talk about it. More so than other disciplines I have found. I did feed it once to my appendix. I admit he looked great, but he was in prime condition back then as well. Now he is an unblanketed and turned out to enjoy life as a horse full time except for the periods of time he is being ridden, fed or pony-plated. Back then he was stalled, blanketed, groomed to perfection etc. A job change ended that and the rest is history. Now he is "BOSS-less" but still shiny and getting compliments. I wouldn't be against feeding it again. Another thing to consider- think of the sharp edges on ground corn in most sweet feeds. Wonder if studies have been done on the effects of ground corn and ulcers?

I have fed it for 15 years it is in my feed mix.  Whole oats, Barley, and BOSS.  Love it and it has omegas but one omega I think 6 in excess is harder on joints so everything in moderation.  But it does have fibre and makes the coat shiney and so many benefits.  Never had a problem with it!!!

Yeah I read in multiple sites that omega 6 in excess can trigger the inflammatory process to swell joints or other problem areas, but no study has been done on this to determine a max amount that could be fed without harm. All things in moderation I guess!!

I only plan plan to feed .5 cup a day wih possible skipped days when I'm not home to feed (no one  else at the house understands my feed concoctions!!) so how long will it take to see a difference in coat condition??
