When you are looking at weanlings/yearlings what do you look for  in a prospect besides breeding?  They change so much while growing... What do you look for in their conformation?  If anyone wants to attach a photo of their "perfect" prospect that would be great too for examples!!

For me:
Conformation....balanced, no crazy legs, a good V in their chest.
I love a big personality and friendly, curious attitude, eager. I like to watch them run and play.
I love a pedigree too.

The yearling foal that I have for sale below was running himself thru poles in my yard as soon as he could run. Just like a pro, weaving in and out like he knew what he was doing. And, he enjoyed it, because he did it every day lol. That was a great, eager, little man.

Wow!!!  thanks TN barrelracer!  those are some beautiful horses you have there!

So... If a horse is narrow in the front or rear will they grow out of that?  Or if they are higher in rear end will they level out?

Babies as they are growing will change levels, but there are many things that will not change. Shoulder angle will generally stay the same as will hock angles. Proportion wise I like them to have little short pasterns and short cannon bones with a lot of bone structure with a neck that ties in clean, not too low in the chest--this is also something that will not change.

Strong, straight legs. I like a lot of bone. A nice shoulder, and big hip. [=

Being butt high usually levels out, but I wouldn't pick a very narrow colt. I want them to look proportionate.. Even as babies.

This is our yearling, whom I obviously adore. [=

I want to see what their sire and dam looked like. Odds are, if mom and dad are conformationally correct, baby will be too. Not always the case, but your odds are better that way!

Babies change a lot as they grow…but I think you can tell a pretty and correct baby from early on.

Here is my yearling colt. He is just getting better and better looking with age.

What's your definition of narrow? Does she still show good muscling in her chest? Here is a shot of Dirty's chest from February, he turned one in March. He's certainly not narrow, at least not by my standards.

I've always heard look at a youngster at 3 weeks, 3 months and 3 YEARS.  They can go thru periods where they just look weird.  Chest too narrow, head too big, butt too tall ect...  IMO, if you really like the looks of them as a 3 week or 3 month old, you will like them as an adult.

Here is my 3yo.

12 hours old:

8 days old:

2 weeks:

About 3 months old:

Yearling: (Close to 12 months old.)

24 months old:

34 months:

I look at the pedigree the sire and dam then at the prospect. I look at the hip, shoulder, make sure the legs are straight. I also look at the throat latch how the neck ties into the chest. I also want to see the v in the chest. I also look for a large girth. I want to make sure the forearm is longer then the cannon bone, and the hocks are lower then half the length of the leg. I look for a wide forehead and a kind eye. I also make sure there is no over bite and that the underline is longer then the back.

Here is one of mine:

6 weeks

6 months

13 months

2 years old

3 years
(she's at the trainer, so I don't have a slicked off one, and excuse the mess, the door got left open and the wind wreaked havoc!)

I would swear this isn't the same horse if I didn't know better, she looks so different at different times.

I like a horse that is really balanced front to back....meaning I want them to have roughly the amount of muscle in their shoulder as they do in their hip.  I don't prefer a heavy muscled horse over a more light made horse as long as they are balanced hip to shoulder.  I don't want a horse to have a big pretty chest and forearm with no hip, and vice versa.  If I had to choose between two prospects (depending on age) I would probably prefer a more compact made horse than a big long horse.  I would prefer a horse's head and neck tie in a little high rahter than a little low.  Most importantly when I watch a colt/horse walk, where there back foot lands I want to be at least 6" in front of the hoof print where their front foot just picked up.  This is my 4 YO, Ricky (sometimes Richard, LOL), and I would take a pasture full of them just like him.  He's probably the most talented colt i've ever started with.  He's probably also the most ornery but only because he's too smart and gets bored.  Meet Ricky, Actions Peak Louder.  I've had him since he was a weanling and have enjoyed every day of it!
