So.... In Feb I moved to a new boarding place (an old cutting horse man's house). I turn my 2 mares out with his mare and his gelding (that has been gelded since 2yo and never bred anything as a stud) half a day. So the other day I go to feed breakfast and he tells me his dogs went nuts early that morning and came out to find his gelding breeding my 5yo and my 3yo kicking him (lol). My mares both came in to a really heavy heat beginning of April and he couldn't have cared less.

I won't put her on any chemicals or anything like that. I have pens to separate them if I have to. I guess my questions are should I wait to see if it stops? Should I go ahead and separate them? I would have to put the gelding up for the half day that my mare is out because I don't want to take her pasture time away from her. They aren't "hurting" anything- yet. I don't want her to get hurt or get an infection..ect.

what would you do?

Sometimes when everything lines up just right.. a gelding will mount.  My own gelding, whom I have owned for 18 years, mounted my mare once several years back... did his best to get the job done.  He has never done it again and has always been turned out with multiple mares.

My old gelding (25 yo) has been gelding since he was a yearling. I've known him since he was 10ish and never seen him do anything like that until about a year ago one of my mares was in heat and he was mounting her. It was the craziest thing. Even crazier was he was mounting her shoulder...LOL. He was pretty sore the next day and never did it again. Too much work, typical man!

its funny you say that, this gelding is FAT and really out of shape. I watched them the other night when I turned the girls out and she ran out there squatted, peed and stuck her but in his face and his "thang" fell out and kinda got somewhat stiff and he just walked off like "uuuhhh no." She was very confused. Hopefully he learned his lesson lol

My Jackpot was gelded before age 2...never knew what "love" was all about.  He is in his mid 20's now...and we thought we would put he and another gelding and my S.O.'s 25 year old mare in together in the big pasture.  They had been nice over the fence all together for a while so it seemed a good idea.  That flirty red head came in season almost instantly.  And this was the result:

He had the idea and the desire...but not the right technique.  But these two senior citizens did NOT need to be fooling around!  That's how someone breaks a hip right?  She kept encouraging him and lord bless him he kept trying.  We didn't want them getting hurt so we had to separate them again.  I never would have thought he would do that.  He had been pastured with mares before and never ever did he show interest.  She must be "Special"...either that or TC Senior is spiked with Viagra!

That is hilarious!  I love that you got a pic.

Rambo was bad about trying to mount other geldings until he got too old and crippled to want to try.  His besties were always mares, but he never tried to mount them, and he was a wonderful nanny to my filly when she was a baby.  Hmmmmm...

My gelding, who we've had since he was 5, was turned out with 2 mares.  At about  age 15, He mounted my little mare one time about 2 days after they had their spring shots.  She let him and he didn't have a real clue as to what to do.  He didn't do it again, so we chalked it up to feeling funky due to the shots.

I have a gelding that will mount mares at times. We separated them because his front shoes were ripping hide off their backs and butts.

My gelding has decided to impregnate his stall every time a new mare visits him…
He wasn't late cut, my guess is some still have it (meaning non-boy juice) in 'em. He loves his gelding band and won't bother with a mare next door if he's with his gang. But I'm sure he would try to mount a mare if they were turned out together.

My gelding is like that. He had just turned a year old when I had him cut. He was always a perfect gentlemen ... until he came back from the trainer. Then, it became a monthly pain in the rear. I keep my mare on Mare Magic and double the dose if she cycles. I finally broke down and tried a progesterone injection last spring but no change. Went in for his yearly and had him examined for other reasons. After treating him for EPM I had no issues with him. That is until the first heat wave this spring. Knock on wood, haven't had any issues since the temps have remained constantly warm.

My guy I bought 2 yrs ago had been in the pasture with my mare ( who never showed any signs when in heat before him) for probably 4-5 months with no interest. Then one day it was like somebody flipped a switch on him and he wouldn't leave her alone after that. Have no way of separating them at home so I moved her to my parents. I don't understand why all of the sudden something kicks in when they've been together without any interest before. Gotta love hormones!
