| Psalm 49:1-9 Hear this, all peoples; give ear, all inhabitants of the world, both low an high, rich and poor together. My mouth shall speak wisdom, and the meditation of my heart shall give understanding. I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will disclose my dark saying on the harp. Why should I fear in the days of evil, when the iniquity at my heels surrounds me? Those who trust in their wealth and boast in the multitude of their riches, Non of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him. For the redemption of their souls is costly, and it shall cease forever. That he should continue to live eternally and not see the pit.
Somewhere between the foolishness of youth and the wisdom of age we cross over to the land of the listening. Many of life's issues may be solved less painfully if we listen to the experienced and wise. The psalmist would have us heed the lessons he has learned.
He learned that the trouble nipping at his heels was actually all around him. It is like the little girl on the Morton' salt box who reminds us, "When it rains, it pours!" One falling domino leads to another and another until our whole world is in a state of collapse. When we have times like this, we need someone to turn to, who will lead us out of the valley.
When in trouble, some will look for a bailout, a person of means with the power needed to drive them out of the ditch. However, the psalmist leaned that no amount of money or power can liberate the soul held captive. Jesus once asked what someone could give in exchange for his soul. The answer: there is no amount large enough to redeem ourselves. So it goes without saying that the price to redeem another is out of the question too.
What, then is the answer for the troubled heart? It is the power of God's love! The source of redemption is the power in the blood, not our balance in the bank. Wealth is a tool, not a savior. This bit of wisdom comes to us from one who had it all wealth, power, and money yet to find life eternal and joy, he turned to God alone.
Our challenge today is to cross over to the land of the listening. Let us be humble enough to seek the wisdom in God's Word and mature enough to heed the lessons given. The God of our salvation is the God of all joy!
