Bit help

I have a new horse I've had for almost a month.... I LOVE him, a very sweet boy!! But I'm having issues picking the right bit for him... I bought him from my friend who had him on consignment, she had him a week and she had been riding him in "the perfect bit" smooth with the life savor, she told me this is what she liked him in now, but that could change in a week cause she didn't know him all that well yet. I ordered one of the perfect bits and have been running him in that. I feel like my horse doesn't like this bit, or that it's not a good match for the us, at the first you have to help him around, when I pull he tries to pull his head away or tucks it under and shuts down, at the second and third you just lift and shape him a little and he's perfect...
I feel like if I hade something with some gag to it, he's bend better at the first and not be so stiff... He has GREAT breaks & a great handle I just feel like a need something lighter.... Or maybe something with a different less direct action...

Have you tried anything with a chain mouth? He sounds like he might be similar to one of my geldings who needs a little help on the first but after that I barely touch him. I ride him in an original 7 inch grasshopper. Professionals Choice just released something identical - I believe it is called The Derby?
