Hope this is ok to post, as most of us have dogs...
I give my dogs the once a month heartworm pill as prescribed from my vet. But they don't cover all other types of worms, do you give your dogs otc dewormer as well or no?

We use trifexis, one pill a month and controls heart worms, fleas, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. It doesn't claim to keep ticks off but none of mine have any and they're outside dogs so it must work. My vet told me it keeps them off hers too.

oh ok, how much does it cost? I give heardguard. It runs about $85 for a year for a 55 lb dog or so if I remember right. we have tons of ticks here so I have to use a spot on treatment once a month, usually fiproguard works good on mine.

We buy it in a 6 month supply and for one dog 55lbs I think it would run you a little over $100. It is a little pricey but if you figure what you spend apiece in heart guard, wormer, and then frontline it is actually cheaper. We have three ranging from 50lbs to 145lbs and it costs me $350 for 6 months, but I have to buy the big dog two different weights because they don't make a pill that treats his size.

I'm also a Trifexis user! I just moved to TX from Colorado in October, and my dogs were quickly introduced to the flea populaton around here. Fleas, worms, ticks, etc really gross me out, so I went for the best I could give them. Yes, it seems pricey up front, but I have had absoultely no problems since I started giving them the Trifexis.

I live in a very high heartworm area.  We have tons of yucky creepy crawlies, worms, ticks, fleas etc.

My dogs that are inside but go outside quite a bit are on Advantage Multi and (knock on wood) have been clean for both heartworms and instestinal worms at their annual veterinary exams.

Trifexis is the best multi product. If you do use it make sure you give it after a full meal. Or if your dog vomits to give 1/2 the pill after breakfast and 1/2 of the pill after dinner. Sentinel is good too but it doesn't have the flea control that Trifexis does. Trifexis actually kills adult fleas and eggs. Sentinel only sterilizes the fleas. Neither are labeled for ticks, but Trifexis is known to have some tick repellent. It is safe to use a topical such as k9 advantix or frontline plus with Trifexis if ticks are a huge problem.

When you use any of these products it is good to make sure and check for tape worms! Most flea and heartworm control does not prevent tapeworms. You can usually see these on the dog's bum or tail. Tapeworms are from swallowing fleas. Not passed from animal to animal. But cause big problems!

My dog personally is on Trifexis every month all year long even during the winter. Along with k9 advantix during the summer months. I also do a dose of Tri-wormer for tape worms twice yearly.

I was going to also say that we rarely see tapeworms show up on a fecal sample so it is safer to just go ahead and treat for them yearly!
