So my horse developed an abscess in his right hind hoof last Wednesday. Last night I could tell it popped because there was like black pus on the wrap. I just couldn't tell where it was coming from. I already had an appointment made with the vet today, so I went anyways. I got there and he found an abscess on the sole of his hoof, made a little hole, some juices came out and we patched him up, I thought that was the end of it.

When I got home I wanted to clean his hoof so I could re-wrap it just for it to heal. I picked up his hoof and his heal was REALLY squishy. I mean really. So I squeezed on it and white pus started coming out. I squeezed until I got a good amount out. Was that another abscess? Or was that something else? I have stuff to put on his sole, and I'm wondering if I should put it on his heal to if it is an abscess. Thank you! I really need help haha.

I'd say another abcess. Did your vet give you any Uniprim or Tucoprim?

yes, it will help heal them up faster. At least it has in my experience.

If you can flush it with saline to get as much of the infection out it would help. SALINE not peroxide. as peroxide can slow the healing process down. Saline can be a mix of water, epsom salt and iodine. You can use straight water if you have to, but adding the other stuff will promote healing.

Alright I will do that. So this squishy part that I found that has white pus coming out... that is an abscess right? I don't want to have it be something else.

Puss coming out the bottom or heal of a hoof is YES an abcess.

Do a pack of epsom salt and iodine and wrap the hoof in vet wrap and then duct tape over it so that it stays clean.. When changing the bandage everyday try soaking it in a bucket of water and salt as well.. This seems to be the fastest way for us to heal them up

Rinsing out is great, soaking is even better, because whatever you soak with can really travel up into that pus pocket and get it good and clean.

Either soak using a mixture of betadine and water, or I use Oxine soaks (I have it on hand for general soaking for healthy frogs anyways).

I would soak it a few times, keep it nice and clean, so the pocket doesn't close up with gunk in there, and just fester again.

I agree, you need some kind of antibiotic and the powdered Tucoprim is great stuff. I have never had a horse that wouldn't lick the bucket clean with it on their feed. They do have an oral pasty kind of stuff that is the same, but different name. They also seem to love the taste of it. I keep some of both on hand.

I like soaking mine in epsoms and betadine in the hottest water that they will allow for at least 15-20 minutes. Get old IV bags from your vet and cut the top off. Fill with your soaking solution, stick your horse's foot in it, duct tape it at the top and let them sit.  Way less messy than buckets:)

Another way to wrap is to get a baby diaper and put the mixture of betadine and epsom salts/sugardine (whatever you like)  in that and then wrap the foot in it. The little velcro strips work awesome to keep the diaper on the foot. Wrap the diaper with vet wrap and then I put gorilla tape over the top of the vet wrap. This holds up even when I kick them out to pasture:

Baby Diapers work wonders!!! This is the best way to keep with epsom salt and betadine/iodine on the hoof!
