Location: TN | 2 days ago my horse got kicked in the right knee by one of his turnout buddies :( he's fine at a walk and has no swelling or heat, but he limps at a trot and turning to the right he's sore. I'm entered in a rodeo tomorrow night but I'll turnout if he's still sore. What can I do to help him feel better? I'm at a loss since there's no heat, swelling, etc. |

| If you have some mud (clay) that might help. Ice on the knee---I use a feminine pad and put water on it and freeze it. Hold it on with vet wrap. It is good for about 20-30 minutes of cold. I keep some in the freezer at all times. |

I had never thought of that! OP - I was going to suggest poulticing it, then spraying the poultice lightly with water to reactivate it once it dries on the knee. |

Location: Finally horseback again.... | I may be the odd man out here but I would get a quick xray before I chanced running a horse that is showing soreness. I had one not show any lameness, no heat and just a slight limp at a trot. Turned out, she had a handful chips in her knee. Career was over. Had I not, she could have injured herself further or me.... |

I agree.
We had one with a puffy ankle after a race, not even close to being lame but the slight swelling would not go down. Turns out he had fractured his sesamoid, wouldn't have taken much to finish him off for good. |

Location: TN | Thank you all for your good advice! I'm going to give him some time off and poultice his knee tonight. If he's still sore in a few days I'll take him in to get an X-ray. I'm scared that it could be more than a bruise since he's still got a slight limp at the trot and it's almost been a week since he started showing signs of pain. |

Location: stray dump capital of the world | Slightly off topic, but in line with feminine pads. While on a trail ride on a ranch, a rider somehow got hung up in barbwire fencing cutting the horse's hoof/bulb rather badly. While the men folk were scrambling around looking for something to put on the wound (looking for a handkerchief), a rider comes up, jumps off her horse, reaches inside her saddle bag and pulls out one of those monster pads. The ones like you get after having a baby with the ties at the end. She also had vet wrap. The men all looked at her afraid to touch the pad, so she wrapped the horse's hoof. It was hilarious. I keep diapers around, but up to that point, had never considered feminine pads. Now I keep diapers, feminine pads (for heavy and lite days), naturally vet wrap and duct tape. It did the trick... |
