| I haven't read what others wrote... BUT...... Be very clear on what your expectations are... On both your parts... I have had GOOD and VERY BAD outcomes of "Friends" boarding with me.... On the bad ones it was mostly not having clear communication from the begining along with not being "GOOD" friends. |

| I want to add that "I" have been the friend in need of a place for my horses... I have only used a "Full care boarding facility" one time and that was a bad experience for my horse.
The barn manager would do bad things to my horse while she was in her stall. That's a different story.
I am still great friends with 3 of the 4 people I had my horses at. One of the places I was asked to help them with the horse they had bought thier daughter. They had never owned horses before. The mother thought it would just be easier for me to bring my horse to thier house and instead op paying me they would buy feed and hay for mine. The 4th we just grew apart NOT because of the horses. She decided to do llama's |

Location: stray dump capital of the world | I'm doing that now with a friend who has been my friend for 22 years. They don't come out often anymore as the daughter is away in college, and the horse belongs to the daughter. I send them a bill each month and they deposit money in my bank account each month. I charge 170.00 a month and that covers feed (2X daily), deworming, supplements, things like fly spray and fly masks, me holding for the farrier, vet, bringing the horse in at night and turning out in the mornings. I treat all wounds (unless needed to be seen by a vet, but I treat after care), I exercise the horse etc...Everything I do for mine, I do for theirs. In addition to the 170, they pay for hay (because prices are so high with the drought) and they pay the farrier. I start with the 170 and add in hay and farrier charges. (I pay for the farrier and hay and add it in the bill if that makes sense...)Sometimes I wonder if I charge too much, but my husband says my mind is slipping in my old age.
On the other side of that coin, I had another friend that kept their horses out here, but fell behind on paying. That created a lot of stress on the friendship, but more importantly, it created a lot of stress on the marriage. One horse I ended up paying her the difference in her sale price and what she owed me and the other horse is a super senior, so, to me, it was easier just to shut my mouth and keep him here. Again, the decision to purchase horse #1 and take on horse #2 created a large amount of stress in my marriage. The hubby still is not very happy with me. LoL...
If I did it again, the person would have to have the personality of friend #1 and own their responsibility. Friend #1 is out of the state for 6 weeks. Before she left in late June, she deposited what she thought would be owed for July. (numbers change due to how much hay we go through and where in the 6 week term the farrier falls) I couldn't figure out the extra $$ in my account and was so grateful that she is so considerate.
Long story, I know...but I wish you all the luck in your decision.

 I hate cooking and cleaning

Location: Jersey Girl | I would like to add a positive experience too. If it wasn't for my friend (of 20+ yrs) allowing me to board at her place (she does board horses as a business) I would not have horses today. I have a nice field with a run-in (my 2 do not have stalls). I pay $125 per horse, buy feed and help with hay costs. She gives me full care at self care prices.
I am responsible for cleaning and bedding the run-ins and I take care of the farm if they go away or have something to do.
I always pay my board on time...usually way before the first of the month. I clean up after myself too.......

Location: North MS | I now own a horse plus my parents are owed $500 for its care. They ended up giving her to me to start on barrels since I was doing all her trimming. Her previous owner NEVER paid a dime for her care. Showed up once to ride her. Last year we actually sold her on a payment plan and then she was returned to us after the girl used a medical excuse and said she couldn't ride anymore. Feet hadn't been trimmed since she got her, underweight, wormy, and ended up colicking over the winter as a result of poor care and us being unable to get her to eat grain. Lots of shots/supplements/feed and hoof care later she just ran her 4th run on Friday and just out of money in 4D with a beautiful pattern. Expecting good things from this mare who doesn't deserve to be abandoned again. I will not be boarding again (or my parents either). |
