Would work best on attempting to soften up some reins/headstalls? I've tried leather CPR but I didn't like it. Looking to give the reins a softer feel

you can pick up bick at most western stores ... it is typically used on boots.

or you can SOAK them in EVOO, throw 'em in a black trash bag, and set in the sun for an afternoon. That works dang well and is often quite a bit cheaper.

I also really like and prefer skidmore's. http://www.skidmores.com/ They used to sell it at Roy Freys ... I think you can still get it at R Bar B in Topeka too ... Same treatment as the EVOO. liberally apply it, stick in a black trash bag, and leave in the sun for an afternoon. Works WONDERS. :)

Good luck!

ETA for spelling, sorry.

Someone once told me to soak them in corn oil for a day, believe it or not. I tried it and it really did work well. I would guess just about any leather oil would work too. I think the key is probably letting it soak in real well.

I've always used mineral oil. Cheap and convenient. That's what I use on our tack. Works pretty good. I've heard pure neatsfoot isn't good. I don't know why, that's just what I heard. Lol.

Okay neatsfoot oil is out LOL. I don't want anything that will darken it. R bar B is an hour or so drive for me....I work in manhattan and won't get a chance to get there....and weekends are pretty much busy. So my best option is tractor supply here in manhattan (it's on the way home

I like the Passier brand leather conditioner. It won't darken the color much. I have used it on lighter oil tack and it didn't darken it.

Best thing to use on leather that is dried out and stiff or gets sweated on such as reins, breast collars, headstalls is 100% NEATS FOOT OIL it will make them soft and pliable and will darken the leather some ... which will get dark anyway if you use it very much ..

2nd best thing ... soak and re-soak in Lexol leather conditioner ...and let it dry out 24 hours and buff lightly with an old tshirt rag ........ this will not darken the leather ...

^ The oil in the hot sun doesn't get rancid?

This sounds like a great easy way to get leather nice and soft. I'm just worried the oil would go bad in the heat even in that short of a time.

I always soaked mine in a coffee can with olive oil.  Then just hung them in the sun for a day.  It works really well for me.  And I have never had the oil go rancid.

Would veggie oil possibly work? I have an older one ear work headstall that is starting to crack...despite the amount of times I attempted to oil with some weird oil.

I have never had it go rancid .... I don't leave 'em out there more than an afternoon.

to the OP ... I have never used regular vegetable oil so I'm not sure on that one ... You can order 100% neatsfoot over the internet along with most of the oils others have listed. I'm not real sure what the TSC in Manhattan has for conditioners/oil ...

Corn and Veggie oil DO work but one thing to keep in mind.....if you have mice in your barn they will chew on the leather if you use these. So just a word of caution!
