I'll keep this short and to the point.

My SO wants to move to the Fort Worth/Dallas area from Georgia in the next year or two... just to do it! He just wants to go somewhere new and thinks the economy is booming out there.. (I say thinks because I have no idea). I'm sure many of you can tell me.

Thing is, I'm scared to move! And is there truly any more opportunity in the barrel racing world than there is here? I want to experience a new place too but it's a scary thought leaving the only thing I know behind.

Just looking for some feedback/advice/experience..

Thanks!

Do it!! Lots of barrel races, rodeo's, etc. If you can financially do it, go experience something new!

Thanks!

I live in GA and if my husband could pick up the farm and move, we both would go.  He cuts and I have the barrel horses.  We would both be in heaven.  Out west is a whole different ball game then here in GA.  And, we aren't as young as you are.  Go for it, you can always move back.

In my opinion, I've never regretted moving... so many opportunities, experiences and it broadens your horizon. You can ALWAYS move back to where you were if you don't like it but you can't turn back time and do it. It's all in your attitude though, it'll be rough at first getting settled but you'll have fun get out and meet people and be open to anything!! It is what you make of it!

Words of advice though... be sure one of you has a job upon moving and possibly make sure you like the job enough to stay at it until you can find something different.

Good luck!!

Somehow y'all are always right.. I just need to go! Haha. We definitely wouldn't move unless SO had a job lined up. He's a trim carpenter in the high end homes here but I'm not sure what would be available out there or if that business is high out there.

Thanks :) Keep 'em coming!

ETA: We would also save up for the next year or two to be prepared for the move and have a home lined up.

Of the top 10 fastest growing cities in the nation, Texas has at least 3 (if not more). Our economy didn't take the hit like other states did. We have lots of major companies moving to Texas. I want to say Toyota is moving its U.S. headquarters to the DFW area. I doubt your SO would have a problem finding work.

TONS of barrel racing options around here. You would not be lacking there at all.

My main advice: Don't move here without jobs. And do NOT move with SO unless there is an MRS. attached with it.

I Relocated to the Weatherford area about 6 years ago from Eatern Oklahoma where I had lived about 13 years. I don't regret it a bit. It's a small town feel here in Parker County with the bright lights only a short drive away. There are litterally so many shows, races, events you'll be finding it hard to choose which to go to that DAY. Very Little Violence here in parker county compared to Fort worth and dallas as well...

So many Jobs as well... It's the land of milk and honey in my eyes. I love it.

I live in AL and even I know that area has at least quadruple the barrel racing opportunities that the southeast has. You can go to jackpots/barrel races every night of the week out there within a couple hours drive of where you are.

You can do some research on the state too, it has a very strong economy compared to other states.

I lived in TX during college and really loved it, wish I could talk my fiancΓ© into going!

I love Texas! I recommend that you check out the Plano, Murphy, and Wylie areas. The schools in this area are the best, if you have young children. These towns are close enough to every area you hubby would likely be working and they are safe! They are just minutes from "Dallas". Lots of horse related events to the point you will be sick of it, lol. Anyway if you really look into moving PM me and I can give you the full scoop of the area do's and dont's!!

I'm an insurance agent for Allstate so I'm sure I could find something with an agency.

I guess what I was asking is can you make a profit barrel racing down there and move up the latter. I'm pretty sure that's wishful thinking though. Or maybe even work for a ranch down there.. If we all could make money doing this I'm sure we would be so it seems doubtful.

If my husband says the word... I will have this house packed up in 1 day and in the truck waiting lol. I LOVE Texas, just don't like being in this part of Texas. I want to move to around Ft.Worth, he wants to move to Colorado. We will never agree so I think we are stuck in the middle. I'm still trying though lol.

Stretching your comfort zone is the only way to grow! I would suggest visiting here if you haven't been here already, just to make sure you like it. Then search for jobs and housing in the areas you liked.

I left everyone and moved here from Oregon last year. By myself. Didn't really know anyone here. The only familiar soul I brought with me was my horse.
I didn't have anything tying me down, so I figured I might as well quit dreaming about it and just go

I'm very pro moving and experiencing new places .
I just moved from California to Northern Idaho , pop. under 2000 and I couldn't be happier. I never thought it was something I would even consider but I did it for my husbands work and it was the best decision I have ever made.
Moving is hard and completely new towns is even harder. Im still adjusting to the lack of people and quietness here but I love it more each day.

One trip to Teskey's (not too far west of DFW) and you'll be wondering why you didn't move sooner!!

I live 2.5 hours north of DFW, but if I could move there I would in a heartbeat!  I go to DFW every chance I can get.  I had plans to move there after college, but I loved my boyfriend (now husband) more than my desire to move.

There are many, many, many high ends homes.  Hopefully your SO can get some connections and make a smooth transition.

I grew up very close to these places and I would stay away from them if I had horses. The black gumbo ground is the worst and it's getting very crowded in these areas.  You will pay a very pretty penny to live there with even an acre or two.

I appreciate all of the replies! It's great hearing about others experiences. I'll be the one who keeps us here or moves us... I just don't like change! Half of me says it's a great idea just for the experience but the other side says no it's too scary!

I'm such a baby. I like familiar things. The thought of moving is both exciting and crazy sounding to me.

In the last 7 years, I moved from Michigan to Montana, to Wyoming, to a different part of Michigan, to North Dakota. I'm pretty well settled in North Dakota  now and don't plan on leaving....ever. Texas is right up there with us in terms of low unemployment and really they're the only good economies in the US. If you're going to move, TX is an excellent option, especially for a barrel racer. Good luck and have fun! Moving is exciting and the one thing I learned from moving around is home really isn't about the place, it's about who you're with.

If you want to move, I'd say live a little ways out of DFW, maybe around the Granbury area or farther east. Hubby and I have been looking at the Sherman/Denison area too. If you get out just a ways (and don't mind driving) land is quite affordable, even for 10-20 acres with a house. And you will have tons of barrel races go to. All that said, will you make a living at it. Hmm. That's up to you and your horse. Tough market to crack into for that respect but you certainly won't suffer for competition. And if you can hang in TX, you can hang anywhere.
