Anybody have any suggestions for a horse that gets a lot of abscesses? I'm about at my wits end. Horse isn't being used right now and has still had several and this is the 2nd one in 9 months that they have been severely lame from, in that time they have had several other small ones that didn't cause much soreness

Stop pairing out the sole... Put shoes on them if there are a lot of rocks... If there are really a lot of rocks stop running them until you pick them up... Tetanus shots!!

We had spells of wetness earlier in the year but I keep her in if it's too nasty out bc I don't want her in those conditions. The last several weeks it's been super dry though

Well, if a real bad abscess gets to the coffin bone, it can eat a tiny hole in the bone and the anaerobe bacteria moves in, seals itself over and waits for the original one to clear up. Then it will break loose and start over again. I don't know how to stop that once it starts

Well I've already been through the whole coffin bone infection disaster definitely don't want to go there again. Sure wish I could find some prevention....unfortunately I'm not sure there is any

I'm curious. How did they clear that up? All my information I got at school in 91 so it's over 20 years out of date. Back then there was nothing they could do when that happened.

I have used Ritkens (I think that's what it's called) to toughen up my guys feet. He used to ALWAYS get abcesses.

Coppertox is good for waterproofing.... That's about it... Heck, just try washing it out of your clothing or washing it off your skin.... Screw scotch-guard... Wipe Coppertox all over your tent one time...You can flop it upside down and float to the sea without springing a leak...

I think that is a very true statement, Komet! I spilled some on some rocks outside my horse pens and after having about 5 inches of rain off and on this past month the rocks are still green - faded a little but still green!! lol!!

So very true.  As a matter of fact, we spilled some on the concrete and it waterproofed it.  We did it as an experiment when the shoer was there.  Mine prefers Thrush X or the Jeffers brand.

Try the Jeffers brand CJ.  Maybe add a biotin supplement.  I know several of us in this area have had bad luck because of the wet weather we have had this year.
