I'm totally depressed, thinking what could I have done on that much money a month, but then realize I'd be in a freaking mental institute if not for my horses....

And all of the above is why I get so angry with people in my area who think we charge too much for training. Almost a quarter of it is just feed, which they would be spending anyway!!!

Couldn't agree with you more! People just don't get it. We tried to allow people to bring their own hay and feed and charge a little less but then people thought their horses could go a whole month on one bag of feed and 4 bales of hay.... Needless to say we no longer offer that option!

I could feed 4 horses back in 1996 with what it takes to feed one now.

my retired horse is about $75 month. my barrel horse is about $120. this is just for hay. I don't need a lot of other stuff as the hay is nice, and neither are hard keepers. The extras that the barrel horse gets when he is getting rode depends on time of year. I like to do the loading dose of adequan before the season starts, and manintence depends on the schedule. I guess it averages to $200 month for the barrel horse. not including vet/worming/shots/farrier

I figure it runs me @120 per month without supplements as they are diverse for the horses that need them. I own 10 horses and board one for a friend. Once you start adding in the farrier, yearly shots, deworming and unexpected vet bills, it is quite costly. I work for their happiness. Ha-ha!!! However, they make me pretty happy as well.

And what is even more depressing is the things that haven't been included

Farrier every 4-6 weeks
Worming every 3 months
Teeth every 6-12 months
Vaccinations for those who vaccinate (my vet said it costs him 0.40/vaccine quite the mark up)

Then the emergency vet bills
Tack
Hauling, etc

My horse is a really easy keeper, between hay and grain I'm going to say around $40. But I pay for pasture nearly year round as my "board" (I board with friends and pay for all expenses myself...they just throw my mare hay and make sure she has water when they are out checking on and feeding their horses). So I probably have enough it a little better because I have good friends but average pasture board around here is $50 a month. So I figure my average expenses for 1 horse (vet, worming, farrier, feed, board, etc.) is around $120 a month...provided there is nothing major goes wrong. Just upkeep...but did I mention my horse is a really easy keeper. Doesn't take much to keep her going.

I was cleaning out a box full of papers and came across a bill from the feed mill I used to buy my grain mix from.  Date on the bill was 10/1998...price for 16% custom mix was - $5.65 per 50# bag.  I sure miss those days...
